Jaguar xjl super sport Vs CTS v

Hey guys,

As some of you may know I got rid of my AMG recently and picked up a 2012 cts v. I like the V but I'm not in love with it. My main reasons for it was reliability over the AMG and still having a fast car.

That said, I recently discovered that Jaguar made an xjl super sport with a supercharged v8 with around 500hp. The interior quality looks to be miles ahead of the V and the exterior is a little more to my tastes as well.

I'd like to get your opinions on possibly trading the V for one of these jags and wondered if any of you have had any experience modifying the Jag to get more power out of her. I'd love to be able to get it up around 650 at the crank if possible but unfortunately there's not a ton of info out there on these things.

Thanks

I was hoping you guys were going to tell me that Jags have become the most reliable cars on the road and making 700hp would be easy lol

Hey man we need to race so you can come back to the AMG world

As Far as Jags go the new ones are very nice and fast as F8$k and sound amazingggg, and just like the 55's can be made very fast with bolt ons, there is a big aftermarket out there for these cars so parts are not that bad.

Not sure of you budget but if you want a Fast Fun and Rare 4 door the XF-RS is the one there is a local one in Sarasota you should go test drive it

As for me I have the XKR-S on my bucket list one day in the future

I had a 2004 XJR which is essentially a super charged XJ at 400hp. Just stating facts. Changed the suspension, then rebuilt transmission, then blew a bearing, then while it was in the shop, Hurricane Sandy flooded the neighborhood and my car drowned. The car didn't make it past 77,000 miles. Reliability issues? possibly...

Sorry, no experience with the Jags reliability. Surprised you're looking at the XJ VS the XF since the XF is similar in size to the E class and the CTS. They make the XF-R and the XF-RS, both in 500hp range.

Your post states "interior quality looks to be miles ahead of the V..."

Have you actually sat in and driven the car? If not you might want to check it out". You can read between the lines on my thoughts on how "nice" they really are.

Do they "look" good? Yes...

Yea I know the xjl super sport is a lot different than the AMG but I was looking into an s65 as my next one until some techs at the local dealership told me to steer far away from those if I needed something reliable. What I haven't found out yet is if the supercharged 5.0 in the 2012 XJ Supersport is the same as the one in the XF-R. If it is then I may have to seriously consider it... That is if the interior isn't trash as mnm5etr is implying.

Andre, we can still race though you'll probably beat my stock V.

Yeah my dad is a jag guy always has been since the 60's. They are nice "when" they are working. Their reliability went up drastically when Ford took them over. Now I believe they are owned by an Indian company. But from my dad's experience they are still less reliable than a MB. S65 can be a very reliable car, but you also have to remember they are in the bleeding edge when it comes to tech. So they can still have issues and when they do they are expensive to maintain. I would take a s class over a xj for reliability any day. Your CTS-V has a super reliable drive train. But from the ones I have seen those first gen cars interiors desintigrate in this FL heat. I looked at 3 that were falling apart and we're low mileage before I bought the E

Ah, gotcha.
The interior in the XJ seemed soooo much nicer than the XF. But that's just from seeing them in a showroom, no" how does it hold up in real life" experience. Maybe you should lurk on the Jag forums for a while. That's always a good place to hear the good and bad of a car. Plus you can get feedback on how dealers are handling issues.

What price range are you looking in? Ctsv is double the cost of an m113k car. Why not an e63 AMG biturbo or f10 M5?

I spent about $37k for the V so I'd like to stay around that. Looking to stay in something that has performance potential that will also be reliable. That's why I was planning on staying away from AMGs and I just don't like bmws very much.

There is literally nothing else in the price range of a V that will deliver the power and reliability+cost of ownership. Not a single car.

I mean, for fack sake, you can get a CRATE trans for like $1900 from GM.

Don't get some dump jag.

What exactly is wrong with the V? E55 fit and finish is not bad, but its not awesome either.

Yup! That's the reason that people that leave the E get a V , price for power and after, aren't availability is great.

However I do also notice that most of those who leave always want to comeback

I'm coming from a CLS so the interior in that was quite a notch above the V. I have decided to redo the headliner and pillars in the V in some black suede so that should bring it up a notch or two... Not much I can do about the crappy plastics though. It's true though about bang for buck with the V, there's nothing like it. I just bought a smaller pulley, long tubes, and will be porting the blower and should see over 600 at the wheels easily. It's nuts.

British Cars have the worst track records for reliability. My buddy has a 2012 XJ and his sunroof track is broken. Its either stuck in the open or stuck in the closed position, and since his car is out of warranty the dealer said good luck.

Thing about European cars is if you plan to own one out of warranty to make sure you have a second car. If you want reliability then keep the CTS-V...if you want comfort go back to the Mercedes, if you want a nice looking car with a horrid touch screen that is slower than mudd, get a British car.
