This *** NEW Clearcoat...

A deer ran out in front of my car yesterday and JUMPED over the car and nicked the top of trunk. I hit a curb and scuffed up the rear wheel. The insurance company came out today and wrote everything up.

I called TWO mercedes-benz dealers and NEITHER one wants to fix the car. They both said that the process is TOO NEW and that I have to wait 6 to 8 months before they will paint it. Apperently the clearcoat is ceramic and it has to be baked on at 450 degrees. The wheel needs to be ordered from Germany and it will take about a month to get that.

Anyone else have this problem???

Thanks,
ROB

I had to have a portion of the front bumber repainted and it looks great. It could be that the bumber does not have or need this process (like the hood) or that the 2003 did not have ceramic clearcoat.
However, I did replace my front rim and it cost me 795 and took 5 days to receive.

Geee.... Whats going to happen when they need to paint a part of the car that can't be detached from the rest.... 450 degrees is going to be real hard on your interior and other electronics when they have to cook the whole thing... I think I smell some bull****.....

This warrants a call to MBUSA for a full explanation.

There is no way that a repaint requires baking at 450 degrees, they are giving you a line of BS. What if you need a total repaint?

I don't know why you say that, it's the OEM application method.

http://nanotechwire.com/news.asp?nid=560&ntid=122&pg=1

Maybe when they tested 150 cars it didn't occur to them to wreck one and consider the A/B shop repair? I find it entirely likely to believe that repair technology isn't *yet* on a par with manufacturing technology.

I think I'm glad I don't have the ceramic clearcoat now!

Seriously though, there is something fishy, it's a Benz, and it's the dealers fault they can't keep up with the technology that Mercedes is developing!

It is true. I spoke to PPG and MBUSA and the dealer DOES have to bake the ceramic on at 450 degrees.

If there is any plastic or interior pieces on the part that needs to be repainted it ALL must be disassembled. This is a pain in the ***. I asked if just a new trunk decklid could be ordered already prepainted and MBUSA said no. The blemish is about the size of the tip of your pinky.

My dealers NEVER heard of this until about 3 weeks ago when they received a TSB on the ceramic clearcoat. If your paint code has the "C" then it means you have the Ceramic clearcoat.

2 dealers don't want to touch it and a third NEVER called me back.

?Have you guys ever heard of Tire Rack? You can get that wheel tomorrow for:

front 18X8 $449
rear 18X9 $489

Strangely it is only listed under the 2003+ E320 and E500. I think the Webmaster is asleep and forgot to add wheels to the W211 E55 section.

Would be interesting to see if MBUSA could reccomend a repair facility qualified to work with the ceramic clear. Don't they have certain shops certified as repair centers. Seems to me than when they introduced the CL only certain shops were recommended because of the composite panels.

The product is actually made by PPG - maybe they can help.

I wonder how they would buff the clear after it's painted to rid of orange peel, if there would be any orange peel?

If it's a small nick then I wouldn't pressure everyone about getting it repainted this instant. True, it is new technology that is rolling out and if two dealerships say the can't do it and it's 6-8 weeks, then wait it out. I would assume that there will be new equipment used and maybe a slightly different painting procedure. There is alos is a whole write-up about the paint technology on www.GermanCarFans.com a while back.

The wheel is a different story. Sorry to hear about the wheel.

Thanks for the info. I looked on tire rack for the E55 wheels and it came up with none. So after I saw your post I looked again under a 04 e500 and BAM there are the twin spoke wheels. I ordered the rear wheel and both passenger side tires for less than $920. The dealer wanted $879 just for the rear wheel. Everything will be here tomorrrow since the warehouse is about 30 miles away from my house.

Now if I can get this paint problem fixed I will be OK.

You can always have the piece painted with a standard paint product. If you really want the nano clear you could just have it re-cleared in a few months when they figure it out. It is possible though that they will never use nano paint for repairs and will always use a standard paint. Either way, you are not dealing with someone who has alot of common sense. You might want to look elswhere for a repair shop. Oh, no matter what you do, paint match is going to be tough. Go to home depot and get a 500 watt halogen work light (should be 10 or 20 bucks.) Throw it in the trunk and tell them to use the light to make sure the paint will match in direct sunlight. You will thank me later.

Edit: I see you have silver. The light will not be as big a deal.

The Enzo is my Dad's. I wish it was mine, he will not even let me drive it. They went to Italy for 3 weeks and my brother and I were going to take it out, but all that kept going through our head was the movie Ferris Buellers day off , so we left it alone.
