Actually the 550 is lighter, with more power and significantly more torque than the M5 concept. So any talk ofthe M5 being quicker than the E55 is pure BS based on current specs.Originally posted by W210

Who in his right mind would do this? The whole point of the M5 is it is a compromise for someone who can't afford/doesn't want two cars (Prestige 4 door GT and 2 door sports/supercar).
There are plenty of cars that will walk all over the M5 on a track, both cheaper and more expensive. What are you trying to prove here?

werd! although im sure it will be a great track car, if your only purpose is to track your second car then why not a porsche? turn that into a track car? i think you were just trying to prove a point.

1st of all, I really do not fit in the ****pit of any sports car well. So tracking a sports car is not really fit me.

For the track, my ideal car would be the Lotus Elise with the RS4 engine, not a 3,500 lb.+ sedan. I read somewhere the RS6, while tuned for the track with the rough suspension setting, was horrible around the ring due to the brakes overheating.
Lotus Exige is a great track car. Having driven it once before, it's a nice fun roadster. Originally posted by W210

Like I said, I wouldn't mind tracking in a small car if I can fit in it. Tracking M5 is suited for my body weight.
I am having problem with all sports car, because I am short and far. My stomach sit less than 2 inches away from the airbag. If I sit too back, my arm can't reach the steering wheel.
Idealy, I would be more than happy to track a miata. I have my *** handed to me more than once by those miata. I am more than aware what then can do on track.
Tracking sport sedan is not a great choice, hey at least I would be more than honest enough to state that I have my *** handed to me on my M5 and M3 by impreza and miatas.
The problem with this board is that you guys are too proud of your car and can't accept any criticism. So this has now turned into name calling.

To me, it all started when someone posted the immature comment that 'E55 owners worry sick about the new M5'. I would expect the same treatment if I go to the M5 board and proclaim such meaningless comments.Originally posted by krispykrme

Back to car discussions, while it was obvious that the W211 E55 when introduced, would be miles ahead of the E39 M5 in acceleration, the same cannot be said about the E60 M5 when compared to the W211 E55.
As others had pointed out using the Ferrari 550 as an analogy, the power to weight ratio is not there in the E60 M5 to out accelerate the W211 E55, and the little torque the M5 has does not help.
I understand you have an order for the M5 hence would feel very passionate and defensive about it, however, expecting it to do well in all areas would be unrealistic.

If the Porsche is too ugly for you, and you can't find a 360 or Lambo at a price you like, and you can't fit in a Lotus, would the Evo or WRX make much more sense than a E60 M5 for tracking?
Even a Corvette, Viper or Ford GT would make a far better track car than a heavily modified E60 M5.
Have you tried you should be able to fit in one of those!

I asked you if you were related to kain, a valid question given your one eyed opinions.
I questioned the integrity of your statement that you were buying two M5's, one for the track. If you told that story at the pub, you'd get even blunter responses than what you received here.
You accuse others of being one eyed, yet ignore logical discussion.
You accuse others of name calling, but you're the only one here calling names.
Then you spit the dummy like a baby.

...quite simply, as others have alluded to, either you are stretching the truth to the breaking point, or are a real dummy. Why? Well, frankly, only a dummy would buy a 4,000 pound sedan as a track car! You see, there are concepts such as physics, momentum, weight transfer, etc. which kinda sorta demonstrate to anyone with a brain that a lighter car with a similar weight/hp ratio will kick the everloving sh*t out of a heavier car, each and every time.
Want proof? Fine. Let's stay within the BMW marque. Have a look at this link: it is a comparison of acceleration, handling, braking, and track time numbers for the E39 M5 and the E46 M3. You will notice, assuming you can operate a calculator and perform simple math, that the horsepower/weight ratio of these cars is the same, roughly 10:1, which means that straight line acceleration should be roughly the same, given equal drivers...and yet, in track comparisons with the same driver at the wheel, the 600 pound lighter M3 managed to kick the everloving sh*t out of the M5. Both tests used the same driver, but look at the differences in lap times:
Nuerburgring:
M3: 8'22"
M5: 8'29"
Hockenheim:
M3: 1'17.6"
M5: 1'18.5"
Now, as I'm sure a seasoned track ace like yourself is doubtlessly aware, a 0.1 second margin in a direct comparson between two cars with a seasoned pro at the wheel is an *eternity*; a 0.9 second gap is, well, nine eternities, and a seven second time is a sh*tload of eternities. And given that the main difference here is, well, based upon the laws of physics, might you please be kind enough to explain why, if your goal is to have a superior track car, you would opt for a 4,000+ pound sedan with an 8:1 weight/hp ratio when there are several sports cars available with the same weight/hp ratio and several hundred pounds *less* of time-robbing weight???
Please enlighten us, oh Schumacher-in-waiting: why would one choose the 500 horsepower, 4,000+ pound M5 (weight/hp ratio = 8:1) over a 405 horsepower, 3,150 pound Z06 Corvette (weight/hp ratio = 7.78:1) for track duty? Because one likes destroying brakes sooner, or wearing out tires faster? Because one likes taking corners at slower speeds?
So, please, spare us: if you prefer, for whatever reason, the BMW marque and the M, fine, but arguing that a 4,000+ pound four-door sedan is "the" best track car for the money is ludicrous.
I'll await your ridiculous answer, although I won't be wasting any more time engaging you.

Given your lack of spelling and grammer I highly doubt you are a professional person capable of purchasing the cars you list.
The reason I ran off with my tail between my legs is because I was afwaid of big bad kwispycweme. Pwease kwispy dont hurt me, I'll be good from here on in, I pwomise.

Lastly
If a REAL 3700lb 500hp, 600nm Ferrari is only as quick as a REAL W211 E55, how is a hypothetical, still to be released 3800lb, 500hp, 500nm BMW going to be faster?

I just caught up with this thread. I will not get involved in the bull$%$#t however, I did want to respond to the last post by Improviz
My purpose with the E55 is to make it as fast as it can me while still maintaining its practical nature. I don't think there is another car available that is as fast and practical at the same time including the new M5. With just two hours of engine work I now have a four door car that runs an 11.8 second 1/4 and I can still put my three kids in the back and ride in comfort!! That is what it is all about.

...but rather his knowledge (or lack thereof) of what constitutes a superior track car. I know a lot of guys *do* track M5's, but a simple comparison of the numbers the car has posted in the hands of pro drivers aptly demonstrates that there are plenty of cars available for the same money or less which will thrash it around a track.
Also, there are custom seats available, along with custom pedal & steering wheel adjustments, if the individual is a "poor fit" for the sports car. So, I don't consider this explanation to be particularly credible (just as I don't consider the M5 to be an ideal track car, although it certainly performs fantastically well for a 4,000 pound sedan).

I originally questioned the legitimacy of his claim of purchasing two M5's and instead of responding intelligently, with his reasons, he launched into a tirade of abuse and name calling. Perhaps I should have put a smilie on the end of my remark.

On a lighter note, i was cruising down LA yesterday and i saw a beautiful 360 challenge stradale and that thing looked and sounded emazing. prob the loudest car i have heard. i then saw a black lambo murc and thought of you. how's the gallardo doing? have you reconsidered changing that beautiful two tone interior?
