E55 Radiator Replacement Tips?

Hi guys, I'm getting ready to replace the radiator on my 04 E55. I've been searching for a DIY on this but haven't found anything. I have the general idea of removing the top mount and disconnecting the hoses and transmission line.

Anybody have a DIY or tips they can share to make the job go smoother? Would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

its pretty straight forward.. depending on where you live and if the car has been exposed to salt, especially then, be prepared to some wiggling and patience with the lower trans cooler line.

I live in California so no issues of salt or rust fortunately. Are the radiator hose clamps regular hose clamps or are there any clips that I'll have to use a special technique to push and pull them off? Same for the trans line.

For me getting the fan shroud and fan out was no picnic. Stay patient when it does not want to come out it is probably because there is a hidden bolt somewhere

That's usually the tough part when the instructions say, "unclamp the hose" but there's a special way to do unclamp it. haha The secret jiggle, tap, and pulls are what do the trick ha.

Check this post. There is some helpful information in it regarding fan shroud removal. Good Luck....it is a little tricky but very doable...https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...oving-fan.html

W211 E55 Radiator DIY Complete

Thanks for the resources, I was able to do it in 4 hours this weekend including a little cleaning. All in all it was pretty straight forward, just go slow and make sure you unclip everything as you pull the radiator out. I followed the instructions in the video below with the exception that it's for a e320 so there were some additional steps to separate the Heat exchanger from the Radiator (undo the hoses that run into the HE on the passenger sode of the HE. Pictures below, thanks! Oh and I went with a Nissen replacement, fit perfectly without any issues. Old one was a Valeo manufactured in 12/04. It was leaking at the seams and into the driver side intake inlet.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing.

I'm currently trying to do the same with my E63, but somehow I can't get the radiator out. It seems the oil cooler is fixed on the radiator and prevent me from removing it. How did you do that ?

The oil cooler only has a small clip on the black line that runs on the passenger side and underneath the radiator. Follow the line from the cooler toward the radiator and you'll see it. That's the only thing holding it on. Just use a flathead to pry the clip off it's a small black clip that hugs the line, very simple.

Thanks for the tip that helped me realize E55 and E63 coolers are ... different !

I managed to remove my radiator now, but actually the coller needs to be unscrewed to be uncliped.

I just replaced my radiator with a nissens replacement. I ended up taking the bumper off which helped tremendously when figuring out how the radiator, power steering cooler, AC condenser, and heat exchanger are all connected. I would recommend spending the 15 extra minutes to do this step. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing how to if you need help.
