Secondary cat removal
I had the secondary cats removed, and a new crossover pipe installed yesterday.
Off idle there is no discernible difference, but at any amount of revs above 2000 the exhaust note is noticeably better, the engine sounds angrier than ever before.
There is a muted but impressive burble on deceleration now as well. It has preserved the MB exhaust note but has increased the overall volume and presence.
I may be imagining it, but the engine also seems to breathe better and rev more freely.

Keep in mind when opening up the exhaust, torque changes as the engine is breathing better.
The power of tuning will change the power curve to utilize the exhaust mod.
It worked for me.
Cheers

I'm very interested in going the same route, leaving the resonator be.

+1. This is the only mod I'm considering too. Pics would be awesome to show muffler shop. Did you supply the X pipe? Or the shop?

I just happen to have the car over the pit (I'm removing the tow bar that the previous owner installed).
I've drawn over the photo to show you where the cross-over pipe was installed, as the camera did not pick it up very well.
It's all done in 2.75" 304 (?) stainless steel tubing. Mandrel-bent at a local muffler shop.
I used the second photo to detail what I wanted done.

I've uploaded some photos, but I have yet to figure out how to get a sound file. Reason being, simply blipping the throttle in the driveway isn't going to capture the brilliance of this mod. It's when you downshift (paddle) in 4th to 3rd at 4000rpm, or accelerate hard from a stop that this arrangement really sounds wonderful. It burbles when you decelerate, it's glorious, and it still sounds like a European V8, not a muscle car.
