I think my brake job just got a lot more expensive! (SBC Service Threshold Reached)

So I have all the stuff I need do do new pads, rotors, and a fluid flush, since I know they all need replacing. The very day that I pull my car into the garage I get the white Brake System needs service message. I think great, I guess I timed that pretty well, expecting the car to just tell me the pads are low.

Well, when I hooked up STAR I see this:

It's telling me I have reached the service threshold of the SBC, if I'm not mistaken. Here's a screen grab of the actuation count:

Looks like I have a little over 555,000 actuations. Does that mean the counter has been reset already? I've read on other posts that it goes off at around 300k actuations.

I ran the pressure test and it came back fine, so I guess the accumulator is working but regardless, the SBC has reached its limit. Do I have this right?

Since I have STAR, is this a DIY-able job. I've already got the SBC disabled for the brake job. Is it as simple as getting a reman unit and swapping it out myself? I don't see any DIY's on this task.

just looking at the difference in actuations for your car vs the repair thread...you arent even close. You are around 500,000 while the repair thread in post 2 shows 10 million.

What gives there? Why would you get a "service threshold" warning when the other gent got 20 times the actuations?

I don't think those last two pictures in that other thread are showing the right screen. The DJ_GetPmpCycle has different data than the DJ_GetBrLiveTime. Based on other threads, the actuation limit is somewhere around 300k, but mine is at 555k and I just got the message. Not sure why the difference.

At any rate, the R&R is pretty straight forward since I have STAR. My local dealer has one in stock for about $1200, minus my 15% Costco discount should put me a little over $1k to replace it myself.

Yes, the Costco discount comes in very handy. I use it every time I buy parts at the dealer and I even used it when I had my rear main seal replaced. You just need to print a coupon every time and bring it in with you.

I expect to be doing this in the next 12 months also.
Please come back and tell us how the job went, and if there are any important differences to the procedure in that link

Did you get the red error message on the cluster about the SBC?
If not I would disregard and go on with the normal brake job if pump and accumulator are still holding correct BAR pressure?

Cheers

It was the white message on the cluster, but STAR shows the messages in the above screenshots.

Here's a PSA for all Costco members. If you didn't already know it, your membership includes Costco auto services, which allows you to print a coupon for 15% off parts and services at a local dealer (they choose for you). Just go to the Costco Auto Parts and Serivces page, enter your info and submit the form. You will get an email with the coupon and which local dealer is participating.

My preferred dealer is not the one that Costco sends me to, but they have a policy to honor any other dealer's coupons so I can effectively use the coupon at either one.

As far as I know there's no limit to how many of these you can use; I'm probably up to 5 or 6 in the last year or two.

Joe check your accumulator, since it wasn't the red message I'm betting it's that and not the sbc pump

i am curious about the count also -- i have read the 300k count set off an error message as well and 500k is red message/fail - anyone clarify this ?

keep us posted on your repair please - i am sure it will hit us all at some point

I ran the pressure test in STAR and it came back OK, but as you can see from the screenshots above, it's pretty clear it wants me to replace the whole unit. I'll do that now since I was going to flush the fluid as part of my brake job anyway.

If you're not in a rush though, most online MB dealers tend to discount more than 15%, usually around 20-30% depending on the part. Get the part number and if you're not in a rush, probably around $800 for the part online which is what most people have been quoting for a reman unit in the regular W211 forum.
