Is my Torque Converter as faulty

Hey Guys,

So a few months ago I had an issue where my trans would flare a little (100-200rpms max) in 2nd to 3rd gear shift. I drained and filled trans 2x 3.5 quarts. Issue disappeared.

All of a sudden the last week or two the issue raises its head again, but now there is more of a problem. Every gear engagement has became pronounced, not harsh but I am feeling engagement of the next gear, then it takes a few milliseconds then finally I am fully engaged. Kinda like a partial engagement then full engagement and I start moving along as I should.

I can beat on it and it locks up hard but there is an issue so I just am putting around testing it and really letting my butt listen.

I do hear a kind of ticking that sounds right where the Tq Converter is...

80* mark on the dipstick is met after driving around a while and the motor is hot.

Is there a way to test pressure output from Tq. Converter in STAR?

I have unlocked the converter and driven around to test the issue is still present. I feel the issue is pressure related as there is not enough pressure generated to fully lock engagement.

Anyone want to recommend a test procedure? I have a used Tq Converter I am planning on sending off for rebuild and a Conductor plate I can throw in if I need to... looking for direction from some guru's

Thanks,
Will

You can do the conductor plate if you want to check if that's the problem it's just a really annoying job to do...

Is your plug clean and dry when you pull the cable out?

Which fluid did you use?

Shell 134

Plug has been changed there is no wicking

I am wondering if sneaky ECU reset cleared adaptation variables... possible I think that is what happened bc they are no longer in the positive range 4 or 5 in gears 1,3,4,5 and 2nd gear showed 8) They have now dropped to 0's or are negative values. Perhaps I just need to spend some time in STAR driving around adapting.

I am in process of tearing down another transmission to rebuild, replace clutch packs and free-wheel sprags etc

I just am wanting some more intel vs chasing ghosts

The 722.6 is a mystery to me.

Not that automatic transmissions in general aren't

Good luck m8

Very easy transmission to rebuild, although I am an Automatic Rebuilder by trade for 30 years now. But really they are not bad to do.

So Boosted...that being said look at your fill rates on Star and see how long each clutch pack is taking to "fill" when applied.
Also drain the fluid again and take a real good look at the condition. You really DO NOT want any "glitter" in the oil. This will really tear things up inside. If you need help by all means let me know!

Update On Status / Parts Confirmation Needed

So, apparently the "sneaky ECU reset" clears out the TCU adaptation values. That's when the problems started again.

I replaced conductor plate and installed the other set of blue tops I had into the transmission to see if they would help.

Not any better. The fluid was bright red and there was not any shimmer inside. It did not smell smoky. There was a bunch of clutch pack sludge in the bottom of the pan from me beating this things *** though.

I re-adapted the transmission 3 times now and it is a little better but it will still flare sometimes in 1st-2nd shift (F1 sprag having issues?) and also the 2-3 shift (clutches of f2?) and also randomly on the 3-4 shift every blue moon (f2?)

Fill rates were in the 4-5 millibar range with the 2-3 shift fill rate being the highest (7 or 8) that was before sneaky ECU reset.

Now they are all zeros or negatives despite re-adaptation. I can only get the 2-3 to adapt to a positive value of 4 and then after another +1 as of another 15 more "quantity adaptation" cycles.

So I am at a place I am going to get a spare torque converter rebuilt that I have and order parts to rebuild a spare box I have (722.643 that came in the car)

So SICAMG and guys here is question will the below clutch pack list and sprag gears fulfill my needs

These are from the S65 722.649 and should be a direct swap and upgrade for our 722.643 box:

Which Sprag Gears do I order? Are all parts correct?
