I thought the diffs came blank and you had to transfer your own ring gear, keeping the ratio the same. Am I missing something here?

No, you are correct. Poster above is just confirming mis-information.
I guess it is possible and convenient to change ring gear ratios if/when you install an LSD, but gear ratios are completely unrelated to the LSD internals itself.

Let's make it clear for everybody going forward:
  • LSD aftermarket (and factory options) consist of spider-gear replacing devices
  • The input side of an LSD is a ring-gear mounting surface where the factory ratio ring-gear is mounted
  • The output side of an LSD are two female spline drive cavities where factory axles slide into
  • The device itself generally represents a conical shape tapering away from the ring gear

Yeah after reading some diys i came to the same conclusion. It was quitw apparent when i saw them swappin the gear ring over and the part # and ratio was engraved on the gear hehe

Thanks for helping me so far, with a lsd install looming next week ive got another question!

Ive been reading through old threads, people speculate that upping the ratio to 282/306 is counter productive in modified, higher hp m113ks. From what i understand changing ratios is considered the 'poor mans supercharger' and as such itll just introduce traction problems and i assune lower final drive for higher gears/speed? With 500 odd whp on dynojet would this be a recommended upgrade?

I had the option to do it - I didn't.

YMMV

In the end it’s just about the top speed because you will run into the rev. limiter. If you’re in a country with the ridiculous speed limit of 65-75 mph who cares about the top speed? It’s not like you’ll ever reach it anyways

Lol its 60mph here but i got a radar..

i think ill just ask the diff shop who im planning to install if they can easily/cheaply source the gear. If its a hassle ill just stick with stock.

Identify HAG215

Dear all,

this may sound like a stupid question, and I hope to know the answer, but would like to make really sure! I am new to the W211 platform, so please excuse if this has already been discussed.
Yes, I did search other threads!

How do I make sure whether my E55 has a HAG 215?

MY car is early 2004, still has 280 blower, was delivered in Dec 2013, but when I lie under the car and check the drive shafts, I cannot see any bolts. So as this is an early 2004 MY, it should have the old style bolted axle shafts, right? But I see no bolts. Is is safe to assume I have the HAG215 and new style splined axles?
Is there no difference to the diff housing / casting?
I ask this, because I already have a Wavetrac LSD and would like to understand what other parts I need for the installation of the LSD.
Is there a good reference thread about this somewhere?
Best regards,

Tadek

Someone with the exact same car, same reason and same story just asked that question a few days ago. I don’t look it up as you can’t find anything on this stupid platform but I can help you with your project. Send me a PM later or tomorrow to remind me.

No, unless you are also changing gear ratio.

Awesome! That is what I thought. Just got concerned when someone said early 2004 cars had HAG210.

Thanks!

Is there a good / preferred source for new bearings etc. as an alternative to Daimler / MB?

LSDs have usually 2.82 or even 3.06 gear ratio.

I can help him with that too if he wants.
