Should I buy this E55 Wagon?

Hey guys,

This is my first post on this site! Been lurking on the forums for quite awhile, tho.

I'm looking to buy my first ever Mercedes model, and this E55 caught my eye. I'm one of those weird people who like wagons, and this is one of the only E55 AMG wagons I've seen available in quite awhile. Relatively low mileage as well. However...

After contacting the dealer, there's little service records with the car, both physical and on CarFax. The car looks to be in good shape, and they said they've done a "100 point inspection". Would you guys trust this?

If I were to purchase it, I'd be doing (as much as possible) maintenance and repairs on my own. So I shouldn't have any exorbitant repair costs. The lack of records scares me, though. I'm most definitely not paying asking price without them.

What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your answers!

Looks nice but the price is a little high IMO. I wouldnt trust their "100 point inspection" its nothing but BS. if you are even considering buying it you should take it to a Mercedes dealer for a pre purchase inspection (PPI) they will be able to tell you the real deal with the car.

Yeah, don't trust their inspection. Get a PPI done at either the dealer or a good indy shop.

The link isn't working and I can't find the car on the site. I have no idea what they show in the listing.

Sorry about the broken link - here's the fixed one.

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...6164/overview/

Yeah there's no way I'm spending that much on it haha, will try to bring it down. If not, I'll start looking at sedans.

The seller agreed to have a Mercedes PPI done, so I may go with that. Only problem is I'm in Michigan and the car is in Cali... will have to see how I can go about getting the PPI done.

Thanks for your help guys!

I don't think the price is that bad overall for the car, maybe just a bit high. It usually seems like the wagons command a $10k or so premium over the sedans. The E63s are the same too.

If that car has been maintained properly 88kmi is nothing, and if anything all the stuff that can go bad has already been replaced. It looks bone stock and the price is really not terrible. If you can scoop it up for ~$25k I think it's a great deal.

2006 E55 Wagon
Tom,

I have seen and driven that car a couple of times. I just did a post on it yesterday. It's a clean car. It was serviced at SoCal MB dealers, so there are some records to be had from the dealer. The price used to be approx. $29K but it's been sitting there for awhile. I liked the car but the S/C bearing was making a ton of noise when I drove it. They planned on fixing it, which is a must. I never did get a PPI on it but someone here did last month and walked away. He mentioned that he was being super picky and decided to wait. Not sure what to read into it but for me, it drove fine, was tight, didn't rattle, etc. All controls worked, but it did have an aftermarket head unit. The good news about that is that it has a rear camera, bluetooth, etc. I did some quick research and it's a nice head unit. It doesn't have a 3rd seat or Keyless Go, if you're okay with not having them. In the end, I think the lack of records, options and S/C bearing kept me away. If they were trying to sell it with the S/C bearing going bad, what else are they hiding? In the end, if you get a good PPI, you should have some peace of mind... Good luck!

Thank you for the responses guys, I appreciate the input!

I've been talking to the dealer via email (very slow response for some reason) and they're up for doing a Mercedes PPI, so I'll probably end up getting one done soon.

Pcar2Bcar - thanks for all the info. Do you happen to know how long this has been on their lot for? Also, I'm kind of sad there's no 3rd row option... IMO, a requirement for a wagon is to have a rear facing 3rd row (;

The SC pulley bearing isn't a big deal for me, that can be replaced quite easily. It does seem kind of weird that they'd sell it in that condition, though.

I understand the wagons are super rare (193 brought over I believe), and demand a premium. I'd love to pull the trigger right now, but I need to save up a bit more before dropping the dough on the wagon. If the wagon is gone by the time I have the funds, I'll just start looking at sedans.

Would you guys recommend this as a decent daily driver (this would be my 1 car if I were to get it)?

Just cause I couldnt resist

https://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/6168715742.html

Right below $20k

Pretty sure this is the one you speak of link didnt work for me.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-Mercede...9ZKhnk&vxp=mtr

Honestly, a dealer PPI checks general functionality of things along with a visual inspection. They missed a bunch of what was wrong with it when I took it in for them to work on and gave it a Gold Star. It is far far from it. I would look for someone who has personal experience with the M113k AMG line of vehicles IMHO. They have many pitfalls.

The dealer is not going to be able to pull SBC actuation count, they will probably pull a VMI and give it a road test/shake down. As long as it stops/starts and doesnt pee fluids all over their floor it will pass their light inspection.

Hope that helps a bit

2006 E55 Wagon
Tom,

I am not sure how long it's been on their lot but I think since possibly mid-2016 judging by the Carfax. Possibly September? In all honesty, the 3rd row is small, useless unless you have small children or grandchildren. No adults can sit back there unless it's just to the liquor store for more juice... Perhaps they fixed the SC bearing by now, since I drove it a few months ago. It was rattling a lot when idling and easily the first thing I noticed. Regarding DD, I drive mine almost daily, although I share it with an E39 540. I will probably sell the 540 and DD the wagon soon. Mine wagon has 68K on it. Hope this helps. Good luck!

The one in Cali. I had them take it for a PPI, but something fishy was up when they wouldn't take it to an independent right down the street from them. So I had them take it somewhere else. I never got a full PPI report because my main focus was paint/body work. Apparently, according to the shop, something happened in the rear passenger quarter. Who knows because I never got to see it in person, so I passed.

As far as pricing goes, it seems about right. I just paid 26.5 for mine with 88k as well, but mine had all the options third row, distronic, adaptive head lights, dynamic seats, heat cooled, shades, push start.

Me thinks you can get a better price.

The Atlanta one... Looks like he tapped a curb pretty hard in the rear.

very rare, I would ****** it up if I could. Due to lack of proper service records I would demand the price be reduced significantly. you don't want to be replacing air shocks, or a transmission after you take delivery. My 2 Cents.
