Considering an E55K

Hey guys, I currently own a BMW E39 M5 but I am considering changing for a W211 E55K. Has anyone here owned both? How did they compare?

I've driven both, the V8 M5, and own the E55. I like the looks of the M5 better, and it handles better as well, but the E55 is better built, faster, and more comfortable.

For looks and handling the M5 is the winner IMO. I found a super nice one with lower miles when I was E63 shopping. The guy was asking $26k for it and would not come down to $25k, which the most I was willing to spend on one. If he'd come down that $1,000 I'd most likely be driving an E39 M5 right now instead of the E63.

I haven't driven a W211 E55, but obviously they have a lot more power than the M5.

Thanks for your replies.

I have two choices really. I was originally going to supercharge my M5 with a kit that will give it around 550 to 600whp, but then the thought of an E55 came in. So I am exploring that at the moment as it seems to offer a lot of what I am looking for.

what are spares like? Do MB keep parts for them or do they discontinue making them after a while? I am aware of the sbc pump issues but not massively well versed on them. I'd be looking to take one to over 500whp including lowering one etc. It depends on what is possible.

I'd obviously prefer a manual but the performance from the E55 looks to make up for that, especially with a TCU remap.

agreed on the M5 being the better looking car. I cannot comment on the handling etc as I haven't driven an E55 yet.

I had a 2000 M5 with a bunch of Dinan stuff. I got walked by an F430 and a GTR in the same day. The cars have been around so long that its just a matter of preference.

Cheers. I'd expect an E39 to get walked by an F430 and a GTR - more power, lighter. If you're going to compare apples, then compare them with apples

I'd expect them both to pull away from a stock E55K.

That's a beautiful color! I'd ditch that horrid grille and put the ornament back though!
