2006 bolt-on CL55 AMG tames 2017 C63 S AMG
Though not sure where this thread belongs...the 03-06 CL55 crowd seem not interested or are receiving their early evening sponge baths and crispets and tea, so...this's for the 03-06 E55 AMG brethren who inspired me to build-up an 06 CL55 AMG... I'll just throw this out there for those who may become amused or feel it helps them judge where they're at with their ageing AMG: Yesterday while on 3 lane interstate in granny lane, cruising at 75 mph, one car ahead in front of me in granny lane is a black 2017 Mercedes C63 S sedan driven by a male, approx. age 30's. He looks in his rear view mirror with the glance "what's this old but clean looking CL55 AMG behind me that may need a lesson in hard acceleration" look, lol. I pulled up besides him with passenger window open and yelled "That's kicking! That's my next AMG, a V8 Bi-Turbo!" Instead of acknowledging the compliment with a smile and a thumbs-up, he guns it forward then let's off, signaling "let's go for it". To be frank, though my 06 CL55 AMG is well massaged (approx. 625+ horse @ 670+ lbs. trq. at the crank), I wasn't sure if it had gained too much heat-soak during the approx. 25 miles of 75 mph cruising. Crap! Let's go for it! Win or lose, it'll be placed in the happening box for evaluation etc. I pulled up at 70 mph placing us even then allowed for him to do whatever he wanted, no 3 honks, just his decision to make the jump. My left index finger layed on the downshift paddle shifter waiting to hit it down from 5th to 3rd. Traffic is clear... He hits it. I instantly flick to 3rd and mash it. My CL lets out a loud barking roar down through the Kleeman headers, 200 cell primary cats through the stock resonators, then out the stock mufflers. The massaged blown 5.4 instantly bangs to 6700 rpm, bringing forth all the EC tune, Kleeman, DTK 77mm c/pulley and TCU, etc. etc... mods with it. The 2006 CL55 AMG smartly and decidedly darted ahead, gaping car lengths the 2017 C63 AMG within a few seconds...quick and decisive kill. I let off the pedal to allow him to gain then go even. I yelled through the passenger window "That thing's got a awesome note. This has over 600 at the crank!". Instead of a smile, small talk, or thumbs-up, he displayed a smug upset face and looked ahead. Now it was time for me to exit on to a straight major 3 lane arterial road. Instead of continuing ahead, he shifted to the right then followed me on to the exit ramp. Uh oh! He wants to take this to a dig. This's where I'm really concerned due to a lack of an LSD. Hopefully the inexpensive rear Hankook Ventus 295's on 10.5 wheels will help with ESP off. We lined up at a red light, it turns green, I let it rip without paddle shifters...Smoked him! And it wasn't a slight slow smoking, it was a quick and decisive kill. We came to the next red light. I yelled from the drivers window "The bark then backfire blasts when you let off the gas is intoxicating. How does mine sound?" He said "Isn't it funny that we can't clearly hear the exhaust note?" Now it's apparent he's now humbled enough to talk, lol The light turned green...the same results. Whether he was a seasoned street brawler or not, the 7 speed wet clutched trans., electronic posi-traction 505 bhp @ 515 lb./ft. 2017 C63 S is a fairly easy muscle sedan that does consistent 3.8 second 0-60 and 12.0 second 1/4 mile. It's a mash and go no need to think whether to feather the pedal or select a gear muscle sedan (a coupe is available). Though never tracked, I'm guessing my 161k mile bolt-on 2006 CL55 AMG is doing 3.5 second 0-60 and a mid to low 11 second 1/4 mile. Mods: EC ECU tune, DTK TCU tune, DTK clutched 77mm pulley, belt-wrap, EC tandem heat-exchanger, stock intake w/K&N filters, Kleeman mid-length headers, 200 cell primary cats, deleted secondary cats, stock resonators and mufflers. Light weight 19" MMR flow forged staggered wheels; front 8.5" with Hankook Ventus 255/35, rear 10.5" Hankook Ventus 295/30, Yellow Speed Sport coil-overs (complete deletion of ABC), front and rear sway bars. Deletion of ABC, exhaust mods, and a few other items bring an approx. curb weight of 4000 lbs (stock- 4300 lbs.) Next: rebuilt and ported heads (HeadGames, NJ), 82mm TB, 550 injectors, trunk tank, Quaife LSD.
