“It’s been a few days now and I can still hear the new M5 V10’s ringing in my ears. You don’t often get cars driving on to stands at motor shows, but at the Geneva Auto Salon the legendary Hans Stuck gingerly piloted the ‘M5 Concept’ from its hiding place on to the BMW stand to the rapturous applause of the assembled press. For a couple of spine-tingling seconds he gave the V10 some beans and believe me when I say the car will be worth buying for the noise alone. Higher pitched than the current car’s V8, more tuneful than the M3 CSL and pretty **** close to standing in the F1 pits when the Williams F1 car is being warmed up. Glorious”

i'd have to say that the car would be hot if it wasn't for the rear of the car. WTF are they thinking with that trunk? hopefully they will lower it and round it off so it flows with the car when they get a facelift next.
BTW- bangle didn't design the 5 series

I was reading an article on the BMW 4 series coupe (which looks really promising) in R&T and they were saying that BMW admitted that the styling of the rear on the 7 and 5, specifically the trunk, was probably a mistake. They seemed to indicate that the rear on all BMWs would be restyled shortly. I am hoping that is true. I am interested in getting the new M5 as my next daily driver but unless they redo the trunk and there is a kit for the front and rear bumpers, my next daily driver is definitely not going to be a M5.

OMFG is that ugly! I am a BMW fan at heart, but this I cannot accept. I know the performance will sell me, but jeez!
I do like the side skirts and understyling though (esp rear underspoiler and tailpipes) - very cool there! The kabuki front end and bustle trunk have GOT to go!
I just saw my first live-in-person 6-series - Now that will be a beautiful and promising "M" car!!!

2004 E55
I could never get used to it. First off, to me the most important exterior part of a car is the rear. It's the view of a car people see the longest and most closely in traffic. You sit behind something and the thoughts form in your head about whether you like that model or question the taste of the person behind the wheel. For me there has to be a symetry to it, the tail lights have to have a nice look, and there certainly can't be no stupid muffler showing like a lot of cars have. To me, the E55 is attractive and tasteful when viewed from behind. As for the front of the M5, it appears to have an expression, and a sinister one. For a car to have an expression, to me it's, as the Jerky Boys would say....silly lookin.

I guess I am in the minority, but I like the rear of the CONCEPT M5 pictures I have seen. What I don't like is the side view or how the headlights creep into the fenders. I know the interior won't touch the E55, but I wonder if it will be better than I am expecting. I have noticed that I highly prefer a black interior. I wonder if the M5's interior will look much better in black? I have also seen a few new 5 series in black....it is a major improvement for the car IMO. One (that had custom wheels) actually caught my eye in a good way....time will tell.

Umm, no it doesn't, how does it take the driver out of the equation? I guess those formula one cars drive themselves around the track.

I understand your point, Chappy. But I also understand Norb's point.
I too would've preferred having the option of either the SMG or a true manual stickshift. When purchasing my E500, I debated a long time between that and the 2003 M5, and the 2004 545i, both in the stickshift versions.
I ended up with the E500, but still long for a manual shift. I think with BMW going with SMG only on the M5, that they'll lose some of those customers who are on the fence between the two of them. I do see the benefits of SMG, but a manual shift has it's fans too.

2002 E55, Brilliant Silver/Charcoal and Grey, All option except Parktronic.
Sequential Manual Gearbox
I have to go with Norb on this one. SMG is a manual gearbox as differentiated from an automatic. It has no torque converter, uses a clutch plate, and engages and disengages gears rather than applying clutch packs and belts to planetary gearsets.
If one watches a FIA rally many of the cars are equipped like a SMG, that is with a stick shift and steering wheel paddles. I like the SMG concept as I have ridden motorcycles all my life so it is not a new paradigm for me.
The car is still ugly though it might look better in black, like a dark room or a tunnel, buried in a hole, something like that.

Thanks for the clarification (re: SMG vs. auto). I guess my whole point (in a roundabout way) is that "purist" M5 owners have expressed to me on previous occasions the following:
"I would've gotten the AMG, had it been available with a stick"
A stick...not SMG (I, II, or III). My supposition is that this would no longer be a valid argument. Frankly, I think BMW is making a mistake by not offering a stick on the new M5. My speculation is that the M3 will no longer be available with a stick at some point as well.
