Fuel Filter/ Paper Insert

It is possible to replace the paper filter without completely removing the sending unit. A bit of PITA but worth the cost savings of a whole new sender. Disclaimer: This was preformed on the A 211 470 6494 sender that is paired with the A 211 470 00 00 pumps. YMMV
I could not wait for the overseas filter. I took the filter out of this sender (Fuel Pump Assy 2114704094 )( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Me...53.m2749.l2649

Remove the wire connector
Rotate the top 1/4 turn counter clockwise and pry up top. Remove the paper filter
Drill out new filter element and replace.

I remember my old VW GTI had an inline fuel filter that was a "non-servicable" item. My mechanic friend said "we definitely want to change that out".
When we did, it looked like mud coming out of it.
For informational purposes.....is there 1 or 2 of these in the tank? I'm yet to dig into that region of the car.
