Great work Tim , you are doing all the work I'd like to do to mine. I mean the paint and body. the Capri blue is awesome. Mine is just 040 Black, and my specialty is engines.
Post #145. Supercharger cooler inline with ice tank.

Thank you! How is everything in NC?
Seems like we are just the opposite. I do all my paint/body and I do small mechanicals but I have my son to do any major repairs.
The blue is different, but the Black looks kickass when clean for sure!
The original air intake deflectors at the radiator support where missing when I bought the car. Apparently they were removed in hopes of getting more air forced to the breather boxes and into the engine. So I needed something to put back in their place, either new OG or aftermarket.
I read some old threads about the aftermarket air intake scoops that were being made and all the comments and theory’s on wether they actually help direct more air to the breather boxes to aid in horsepower. Wether they help out or not I really don’t care, the car hauls *** without them and with them I think they look badass once painted and decals added and can be seen through the grille.
I bought these scoops before ever disassembling the car and decided to get them finessed and painted. They are decent, and tig welded together. The edges needed attention as there where some sharpe edges that needed to be smoothed out. The mounting holes were off so I welded them up and drilled new holes. I picked up some nylon bushings and black button head hardware to mount them.
I applied body filler to a few imperfections, primed them, and later prepped them for paint.
I used a red color similar to the calipers and sprayed base color on them. Added the silver AMG decals and then cleared them with a satin clear coat. The decals where also positioned so you could see them through the slots in the grille. The AMG decals came from eBay and are for calipers.
They turned out nice, but I wasn’t sure about painting them red. If I get tired of the red I figured painting them is easy and the decals are cheap so what the hell. Lol.
No prep work pics this time just before and after!!!
The OG bulbs were looking a little dim and I believe they are 4300k? I changed the headlight bulbs to newer HID 5500K whiter units, and changed the city lights to LEDs.
The driving/fog lights I changed to HIDs and mounted the ballast behind the headlights on a factory support bracket for the radiator support. They are out of the way and covered from getting totally wet.

You are making me add to my TODO list, so thanks for that.
I need to do my rockers, and obviously the bumper I have yet to order.
I like the rear tank cooler at the back. It could be a separate circuit then the front to maintain the tank temp a bit.
I am good at the body work up until base/clear but I may attempt to figure it out.
From what I’ve seen of your project pics you have a pretty big to do list for sure. Lol.
You’ve gone this far, get it all looking nice. Everything I’ve seen you do has a lot of attention to detail!
The system is split and seems to do well. Spraying base coat is fairly easy. Clear is a little more difficult, getting it slick without causing runs and keeping it clean. A good clean booth always helps.
They were just thinking about getting ready to change the oil and you just restored a whole car. Lol.
That gave me a laugh. I just hope something I did and posted about helps others in some way. If it just makes guys get out and do some recon work on their rides. It doesn’t have to be major like you and I have been doing.
I enjoy doing the small detailing and cleaning more so than the major disassembly and repaint.
Truly epic thread Tim! Thank you for sharing the progress. Sorry if you already mentioned, but what was your process on cleaning up the exhaust, as well as the diff? Thank you much!

Thanks I appreciate it. I hope it helps others out and motivates everyone to do some detailing to their rides and enjoy them.
The differential was painted with the Alumi Blast paint that I used on the SC in the post a few back.
On the exhaust I used wheel cleaner to clean it with a 3M automotive grade white scotchbrite pad. I’m not totally sure this is the wheel cleaner I used as I have several. If you use it try it on a spot and see how it works and do not put it on polished aluminum.
This cleaner does work great on the aluminum control arms though.
I used Noxon metal polish for the exhaust. I’m not sure where it came from it was something I had at my shop.
Thank you so much Tim! Awesome feedback and help. I just picked up some E63 mufflers and mid section to try this on. Hopefully I can make it look half as good as yours.
Thanks again for the awesome thread full of inspirational greatness!
