E55 Exhaust Muffler Recommendation

Already completed the Muffler delete as the stock mufflers were just too tame and the car sounds like a beast but for me... it’s just too loud at certain speeds and I need to put something there. I installed two glass packs and left the tips exactly stock but it’s still too loud for my ears. For reference, my car is a stock 2006 flint grey e55 with 65k miles. No other mods except the muffler delete. Any recommendations? C63 or C55?

Put the mufflers back on and start deleting catalytic converters starting with secondaries ,(will need x or h pipe)

Put the mufflers back on and delete the resonators. Are you in Louisiana or Los Angeles? If it's Los Angeles you won't pass smog if you get rid of any of the cats.

C63 mufflers are a common and pricey mod that people do.

Im not convinced the c63 will increase volume but will change/improve the sound characteristics if that makes sense. Resonators probably wont be enough people report little to no change removing them but i dunno i have my muffler and resonator in place but no cats. Its nice and loud at WOT but near stock (still a bit louder) at low throttle. Great for boosting real loud then driving stealth past cops later..

Appreciate the recommendations but unfortunately I trashed the mufflers so will have to start over again so at this point it’s a sunk cost. Since I need to “start over”, what would you do in my situation? Buy used e55 muffler, C63 or ? Cat delete is not an option as Strigol indicated as I am in Los Angeles. Thank you all and appreciate the recommendations.

Long tube+no cats+no res+x pipe+e55 mufflers=nice family car neighborhood friendly idle and low revs, but beast when you step on it

same+c63 cans=monster at all times

Keeps us posted. I'm also looking into changing exhaust. Looking for some with better performance but not extremely loud. Nice low rumble that sounds nice for daily driving. Once you get on it, don't mind if it louder.

Will be following your thread.....

Sounds like you want headers mate. Headers cut out the primary cats but if you keep your secondaries youll be quiet on low throttle and a bit louder and more powerful at full throttle. Just note headers come with a little but of header tick. If you wanna be louder at that stage you can cut the secondaries out and get an h pipe installed

He's in CA so headers are a no go.

I already have mids. The owner before me had all the cats cut out on stock headers. My mids did not do a whole lot for sound. I can hear the lifters more because the headers are so thin. Maybe long tubes would give it more of a growl.

Yeah removing the cats adds the noise not the headers IMO. Headers as macedon says add more header tick and probably frontal engine noise rather than exhaust notecif that makes sense. Sometimes i think my engine is so loud struggle to hear my exhaust when driving. Sure people i go past dont have same problem..

Received my c63 Mufflers from my EBay purchase and had them installed. Keep in mind that I’m in Los Angeles so the car is now completely stock except for the C63 exhaus which means that I have cats, resonator and the C63 exhaust. It does NOT sound like the videos on YouTube and is basically identical to the stock e55 sound meaning it is very quiet and no one would not know that I changed anything. Yes...I am a bit disappointed but am very happy that the droning is now gone. Trust me...if I took a video of it now, all would think it was stock.

For those of you who want loud and don’t mind the drone, I have kept my glasspacks and my stock e55 tips which is a cut/weld away from this sound and the car sounds like a beast but just too loud for my ears and I would consider selling them. Yes...I have a video of my car with this setup and will try to post if I can figure out how.

My muffler guy says that if I want the growl, need to install an xpipe and remove resonators and says if I do this, no drone and it will be the sound I want. Anyone have experience on this? I welcome your feedback.

Just want all to learn from my mistakes and I wasted $ getting to this point but I’m learning. Im happy to share whatever I know. For those of you in Los Angeles who want to see my old set up or hear my car, I’m in the Pasadena area and happy to share info. If anyone has done the C63 mufflers, removed the resonator and still has their cats in place, I would love to meet with you and hear your setup so I don’t keep making more mistakes.

Appreciate everyone’s input and feedback. Thank you MBWorld forums and let’s continue to share our experiences.

I'm skeptical that the resonators do much at all. People in the past have reported removing them to no virtually no effect. Perhaps you could get your secondaries hollowed out (now they will look visually there but these is nothing inside), install an x-pipe instead of the resonator and a tune to remove the secondary catalytic warning code?

I've got a resonator delete on my E63 and there was a big difference in how the car sounds. Was well worth the $150 I paid to have then taken out.

E55 glasspack muffler delete video

video of my e55 with glasspacks instead of stock muffler and retaining stock tips prior to replacement by C63 mufflers.

after watching more YouTube videos and reading comments, looks like I need to do the resonator delete and seems like this is what everyone does and they say no drone. Feedback or thoughts?

Listened to some youtube videos, seems like it makes some difference, I guess some people still want more (these were past posts id read). Still quiet vs catless but certainly a good solution for your situation. If it doesnt sound loud as you want after you remove them, you could try gut your rear cats.. So seems like best option/approach to me.

I did the same and it was way too loud and way too much drone. Almost unbearable drone. I put in a Jpipe set up and killed 60% of the drone and toned down the sound a bit as well which to me sounds perfect now.

I am interested in seeing your jpipe set up. Would you mind posting some pics? Thanks.

[left]After a week, love the C63 mufflers but they sound like the e55 stock and now considering to remove resonators. What size X-Pipe do I need to purchase? 2.5” and what does an X-Pipe really do? Is it really necessary? Thanks guys and it was great to meet up with Jerry and see his super clean 05 Silver e55 and hear his Carlson exhaust tonight. He got an amazing deal on his amazing car and I learned a lot about his mods and definitely considering some engine and trans upgrades now. Thank you to the forum. If anyone wants any photos or videos, let me know and I now figured it out.

you could gut the mufflers and try that. maybe take out half of the fiberglass material in them or whatever is packed in there. i have a pair of stock e55 mufflers with tips if you need a second set to try it on
