7 hours of labor for valve cover gasket??????
Got a quote from an indy mechanic here in Chicago for valve cover gasket replacement at 7 hours of labor??? This seems awfully high.
What should i be paying labor wise for valve cover gasket job?
Thanks

On E55? That's crazy. I've watched it done by my Indy, maybe an hour or so if I remember right. I can look up the receipt if necessary. I'm no mechanic but I felt like I could've done it myself.

book time is never accurate for the W211. my indy said the book tells you to be VERY through and there are ways to do things faster safely. hopefully they are charging you for actual time logged not book time. otherwise go somewhere else. also if the mechanic goes on lunch during that time, it shouldn't count even if its under the book time.

Book time is bull**** a lot of the time.
My housemate recently replaced a window regulator in my W210. He said it took him 20 minutes. Book time was 1.8 hours and that's what his shop charges for the job.

I took about 3-4 hours getting every single atom of sealant off and very thorough cleaning and replacement of the hoses. I doubt any shop would be as conscientious as I was.

Took me around 5 hours to do both sides. It really isn't that hard to do.
Here is the DIY I made a while back when I did it. You should also change your plugs and wires if you have not done so when you do this job.

Independent mechanics screw people over too... I've seen BMW independents that cost as much as the dealer and I've heard of independents that cost more than the dealer for mostly equivalent work.
Usually the franchised dealer can get the part cheaper than the independent can due to higher volume. Unfortunately the dealer doesn't pass the savings onto the consumer.
