Why is there a cable around my lower suspension?
Hey guys I recently Purchased a 2006 E55. I was looking around the engine and I noticed this(see pics). There is a coated metal cable tieing the upper and lower parts of the suspension together on both sides of vehicle. Is this some kind of ghetto mod I never heard of. Car rides good and my friend who’s a mechanic took a look at the car and signed off before I purchase. I wish I would’ve waited for the pre-purchased inspection but the earliest they could get me in was 10 days out. What did I get my self into? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

That is something I plan to do. Drivers side mount is getting hammered again.
Looks like you bought the car from a forum member, or at least a reader. That is a legit mod. Saves the engine mount from tearing apart.

It looks to me, that the previous owner used these cables possibly due to bad engine mounts, and he didn't want to pay the expense to have new one installed.
So why didn't your friend see this beforehand?

Or maybe these are wheel tethers used in Formula 1 to keep your wheels attached to the chassis in case of an accident.

I used extra long heavy duty zip ties from Home Depot to strap down my E500 motor mounts after installing Eurocharged mid-length headers.
Been working great three months now.

poly mounts will increase NVH. Some tolerate it, others uninstall.
Either way, Ever notice that no auto manufacturer in the world uses poly motor mounts for OEM?

You are correct they will increase NVH but the biggest factor is by how much? OEM does not use polyurethane as it is more involved then rubber as well as more expensive. The OEM mounts do a wonderful job isolating vibration but have a very poor lifespan.
Most at people that have installed our engine mounts say the vibration is no more then factory. Doing this for a long time I can tell you that the vibration is more then factory. Best way to explain it is you may notice a little more vibration but passengers will never know that the mounts are not factory.

Either way I'd replace with poly's I barely feel a difference with mine honestly and the car feels real nice. You'll feel it the first week and then completely forget it's there, and it's only at idle.
