Air Box Mod

Guys I need help I just modified air box on my 2008 E63 AMG cut out the plastic cover inside air box cover that leads to where the sensor is and inside engine. I just opened it up more in order to get more air goint to the intake into the engine. Car drives very aggressively OMG but it cuts engine when is idling. What is going on to much air into engine or something else. Do I need to go to original air box or just reset CPU. Does to much air causing engine shot down or just sensor is doing this. Please any info will be were appropriated

Sonny.

Go back to the stock air box. What makes you think you know more than those high-paid Mercedes engineers?

Put the stock air box back on. There's many threads about people doing this and it's not worth it.

If you must have some modded air boxes get the ROW ones. They're a waste of money too.

That's a statement made in poor taste considering 50% of the discussions on this board are around modifying the cars... ie... Doing something that improves performance or looks over equipment from "Mercedes engineers"

I agree. On the other hand though the M156 is not a mod-friendly engine and most of the E55 mods we perform do decrease reliability, pulleys breaking, aftermarket pumps crapping themselves so you could argue either way.

I was fooled by the hype of the ROW air box. All I got was SKY HIGH long term fuel trims and a CEL. Going back to stock air box this week...

this is the worst thing you can do to your factory airboxes. it introduces dead spots in the fueling map since air is bypassing the sensors. also your idle will hunt as your o2 sensors are constantly adjusting because air is bypassing the sensors.

i've done it myself and hated how it introduced flat spots to my acceleration.

I disagree with your comment earlier but agree that the ROW air box "mod" isn't worth it.

Mercedes engineers are hindered by regulations and often try to design a one size fits all package. You can modify your vehicle and have it perform better than how the all knowing Mercedes engineers designed it. Headers are a perfect example, a smaller pulley is a perfect example, different gears are a perfect example, ECU/TCU tuning is a perfect example, etc...

Skip to 12 minute mark:

Same applies for most any modern production motor. It is exceptionally rare that original manufacturers leave torque on the table from the factory. Everything out there is extensively researched and tuned for resonance charging.
Manufacturers have known and tuned for this for decades, even things like Acura Vigor had variable length runners way back in early 90s (which BTW is an inline-5 engine).

Leave it be, IMO.

Thank you all guys I just wanted honest opinion This was just experiment and I know now is not worth it. I'm going to original or RenTech High Performance Air Intake Kit.

More often the ECU can't cope with the increased air flow that is measured by the MAF sensor, and the injector can't deliver enough fuel flow to get the perfect AFR.
Then comes the dreaded CEL. So your car will most likely require a tune, to compensate.

Thank you Yuille36 That is exactly what I was thinking and yes you are correct the CEL is on LOL Car is out of commission for now in the garage I wont drive it until is corrected. I will go back to factory Air box or RenTech or some other high performance Air box that most likely comes with tuned ECU package unless I could tune this ECU but where ? that is good question Thank you so much for your input that is why we are here enthusiasts of AMG cars to share and help each other with our experiences

I have had the Carbonio CF Intake & Engine Cover with a smaller crank pulley. Along with headers that deleted the primary cats for years, and it didn't require a tune, and no CEL.
The combination of intake, pulley and headers did net me a little more HP and TQ over stock. Conservatively about 525 hp and 470 tq. And you can definitely feel it from behind the wheel.
It pulls even stronger like a freight train.

Jerry at Eurocharged could set you up with a tune. Just have to let him know what mods are done to the car when you get it. They have a handheld unit so you can easily flash the tune at home on your own. It takes about 5 minutes.

just look up Eurocharged and you'll find all you need for the tune. I had a Eurocharged tune but was recently dyno tuned by Race IQ. I prefer the Race IQ tune but since it was a canned tune vs a dyno tune it probably isn't a fair comparison. You'll be happy with either

the tune will only help...modified air boxes do not work as the sensor is not pointed in the direction of the additional flow that bypasses the sensor.

Here is my airbox when I removed my lids after I got fed up of the dead spots in my fueling map at throttle tip in. I also have a tune, so no check engine light, but honestly no tune can compensate for the inability to measure the incoming air. the sensor itself is faced the wrong way to work with cutting the trumpet off. If the sensor was further downstream we would have zero issues as all air incoming from cutting of the trumpet will be metered.

This is an old blog post of ours, but it shows the dyno numbers before and after airbox mod and how the airbox mod was done.

So lost 1hp in the upper RPM's and maybe gained 1-3hp in the lower RPM's...basically pointless mod due to dyno proof. Thanks for the info OETuning!

Just to clarify our findings....
When dataloging air volume on the street comparing OEM airbox against airbox MOD, there was substantial increase in airflow and benefit seen.
The dyno is not a good way to test this airbox mod was the conclusion. Dyno fans cannot get close to the airspeed/ramair needed to replicate on road conditions. (Between 40mph-100mph vehicle/air speed)
