2006 E55 - obsidian black, all options except pano roof - gone but not forgotten
New e55

Hi all, its been a while since i have been on this forum but just picked up a 2005 E55 with 25k miles, in great condition outside of a few minor cosmetic issues.. The car was serviced prior to delivery but I would like to do the following just start with a clean slate. please let me know what you think and i am missing anything / or if there is something i dont need to do.

Oil change is recent. Brakes and tires essentially new.
trans service?
rear diff service ?
brake fluid flush?
air / cabin filter?
check alignment though feels fine.
Also need another key as only came with one. should i have it made at the dealer or are there alternative options?

Thanks again and glad to be back on this forum!

The key is a dealer only option. Call around as prices can vary, but they aren't cheap.

Post some pics!

Any maintenance services is a step in the right direction, as you don't know what services were performed, unless it was documented.
Also check your serpentine belt, engine coolant. Definitely brake fluid, as it should be changed every two years anyway. Also check your idler pullies and belt tensioner for play.

Every 2 years for brake fluid flush? I thought brake fluid lasts much longer.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. And moisture is bad for your braking system. As moisture is absorbed into the brake fluid, your piston inside your calipers could developed corrosion that leads to stuck pistons, not to mention your master cylinder. So Mercedes recommends every two years.

Engine Coolant, Transmission Fluid and Rear Differential every 4 yrs.
Engine oil, air filter, cabin filter every year.
Have your serpentine belt and spark plugs checked.
And most people neglect their idler pullies.

I also have my AC refrigerant evacuated and refilled every 4 years, to keep the system lubricated and running cold.

I see, I have some work to do then. Thanks for the information.

But remember you don't have to do all these services at one time, as all these services can add up. Just take care of the small ones first, and the big ticket items later.
But take care of the transmission soon, as that is roughly $450 for the full service. All other services are relatively cheap; i.e. engine coolant, brake flush, rear diff.

Don't take your car to a dealer, there are many independent shops that specialize in Mercedes, that can perform these services at a much cheaper price.
Power steering fluid really doesn't go bad, as it is in a seal environment. But if it is not causing you any issues, I would leave it alone, just top it off. Unless you want to change it.

On my 07 E63, I have changed the following:
  1. Engine Coolant - last year
  2. Brake Fluid - last year
  3. Idler Pullies - last year
  4. Serpentine Belt - this year
  5. Spark Plugs - this year
  6. Transmission Fluid & Filter - last year
  7. Rear Differential - last year
  8. Oil Dip Stick & Tube - last year
  9. Oil Cooler O-Rings - this year
  10. Oil Temp Sensor - this year
  11. Complete Brake Pads & Rotors and associate hardware - this year
  12. AC Refrigerant - this year
  13. Positive Crankcase Ventilation Tube - last year
  14. Engine Coolant Expansion Tank - this year
  15. HID Headlight Bulbs - this year
  16. Fog Lights Bulbs - this year
  17. Valve Cover Gaskets - this year
  18. Cam Adjuster Housing Gaskets - this year
  19. Engine Oil - this year
  20. Engine Air Filter - last year
  21. Cabin Air Filter - last year
As these cars age, they will require more maintenance and repairs. And I never took the car into a dealership for any of these services, they were all done at a independent Mercedes shop called Benz Elite Automotive, by trained Mercedes Benz Technicians. And at a faction of what the dealership would charge you. Think about it!!

Nice buy with only 25K! sounds you only have a few little service things and then you can start with the long list of power mods!

thanks for the suggestion, i know its probably cheaper at an indy but don't know any reputable shops in my area..i in the Chicago burbs. There are sine shops that I found online, so will call them tomorrow morning. The local dealer rates are not too bad for most things, though:

rear diff - $ 120
alignment ( if needed )- 170
Coolant flush - 120.

Service D ( showing that its due on the dash ) - 575 - includes oil change, brake fluid change, cabin filter, AC service, lube door jams, sunroof rales, check all belts hoses and pulleys...this is one as bit pricey, i think.

extra key - 250

The trans service is 580. So i dunno... adds up quick!

its pretty much bare bones, just bi-xenons. No other options, no keyless, dynamic seats or Pano roof. I miss the keyless go that I had on my 06 back in the day, but had issues with dynamic seat bolsters popping and pano roof rattling, so i guess i don't miss those too much! Paid 26000.

Did you buy Christian's Silver E55? I was very close to buying that car but decided against it as i really wanted the Keyless go, NAV and the dynamic seats.
