I've heard and read differing opinions on this. Some say it's underrated, whilst others think it's dead-on.

Several dyno tests have shown that E55 motor is producing upwards of 500 crank hp most showing around 520.

MB E55 2004
Mine did 400rwh with a bad water pump.
400x1.2=480 to the crank, I am not sure about the conversion. But it's what I've heard.

E55 POWER

Multiplying RWHP * 1.2 is not the correct form of conversion considering 20% drivetrain loss. The correct way to convert RWHP is this: RWHP / .80

Evosport dyno'd a stock E55 - there's a thread about it on the forums about it - I believe they dyno'd at around 520 crank.

Evosports dyno numbers tend to be a little higher than seen on other dynos. The E55's produce around 15rwhp less than the S/SL55's on average from what I have seen. I think the numbers are dead on.

Most E55's dyno around 405RWHP or slightly more in stock form. Assuming 20% drivetrain loss, that's 506 HP at the crank. If you assume 18% drivetrain loss as some have stated that Mercedes claims, then it's 493.9 HP at the crank, exactly the same as they claim for the SL55.

I have actually had my CLK dyno'd by Evosport and 2 other independent shops. The other shop using a Dynojet netted almost the exact same numbers. The other shop that used a Dynapak dyno netted 3 hp less at the rear wheel.

As for what the E55 really puts out at the crank.... all that matters is what it puts out the rear wheel. Pick a drivetrain loss % and you can pretty much make it whatever you want. I usually use 15 - 17%, but I don't think anyone on this board knows what it really is

It's very impressive, nonetheless.

Thanks for the informative replies.

Using a 18% loss factor,

422.7 RWHP equates to 515 Crank HP.

481.3 RWTQ equates to 586 Crank TQ.

RWHP / 82 * 100 = x

I have been told DynoJet's sometimes show approx 10% greater #'s than in reality.
