384 lb/ft peak torque? This should be an interesting car to drive. Heavy and no low end power. Almost like the small V-8 Ferraris except they are about 800lbs lighter. The 8000RPM redline sounds fun however.

s65AMG, sl500
Torques on the left measured in NM, newton meters.
The curves not too bad
Not quite as much as the 55k, but not bad 73% or torque available from 1200 rpm, pretty good for anycar and particularly as the redline is at 8250 rpm.
73% = 284 lb of torque at 1200 rpm rising to 389lb ft at around 6000 rpm
So should be pretty quick with it's 7 gears SMG box
But it does weigh 1700kg or about the same as the E55
So I don't think there will be much in it in a straight line if you work the M5 hard.

You know, the more I drive the E55 the more I've come to accept the fact that luxury sport sedans should be automatics. I don't mind the E55's speedshift. Like someone said, I'll drive a real sports car if I wanted the sports car experience.
And if the new M5's SMG is anything like the SMG on the M3, it won't be smooth unless you're at WOT. Not very luxurious.

Not quite as much? It is a big difference in torque but your point about the 7 speed is valid. Gearing can make a huge difference. It still should be top performer when pushed hard.

http://home.arcor.de/hexenwind/BMW_M5_Antrieb.pdf
a part of the production will be hand-made, and an other on an automated assembly-line....hmmm. i like the AMG (One man, one engine) philosophy much better.
for sure the M5 will be a really fast car and very sporty, but i don´t know if it will be too sporty. you understand?

"Horsepower is nice, but torque wins races."
By the time the M5 hits its sweet spot the E55 will be long gone. Not to mention, the M5 driver will be shifting his heart out to stay in that sweet spot.

MMAfia brings an interesting point. With so much time to judge the market and analyze the competition, it better be whipping up E55*W211's left and right otherwise .. well.. who gives a damn then?
And straight line numbers in this land do matter, because honestly, how many of yall take your cars to the track. Now how many of yall take real cars to the track? Case in point.

Everything looks amazing on paper, and I'm pretty sure BMW will get everything right in production. What else would you expect from the greatest engine builders in the world?

Did anybody save the M5 dyno graph? I saved it, but I noticed last night that my stupid computer didn't save it as a JPG, so I can't see it now. It looks like the host took it off of the site now. Can someone PM or e-mail it to me?
Edit: Nevermind. I got it from that press release link above.
