Question about Fuel Tank recall / replacement

Greetings,

I have a Service C due on my 2006 E55 with 77K miles. I paged through the FSS to see what items it is reporting to handle. One of the them is the #5 fuel filter. From the previous owners records, the fuel filter was done at 33K miles.

I am planning to get fuel tank replaced this year. Will I simply get a new fuel filter with that work? I'm guessing yes but not sure. Since it was done at 33K I'm not sure how bad it is needed and I really would rather not spend the $700-800 for the the new fuel filter.

thanks!

Extended warranty, NOT a recall. If the tank ain't leaking, Mercedes is not going to replace anything unless you pay them. If the tank is replaced under warranty, *everything* associated with the tank is replaced as it comes as an assembly.

Fuel filter should be replaced every 60K miles. I just replaced mine for the second time out-of-pocket. And I agree the filters aren't cheap at over $400 each...

Ahh Ok. I mis-interpreted and thought the 15 year warranty was like recall and you had until then to get it replaced. But they are only fixing tanks that leak? Ok good to know.

Well, I only have 40K on this current filters so at least I do not have to change them right now.

thanks for the info.

This place is a joke.
You can't go by the FSS schedule in the instrument cluster. It has never worked right since 2003. You need to go by the factory maintenance sheet, or the booklet in the owner's manual pouch. Be careful as these cars are starting to go out of the extended fuel tank warranty. Keep in mind day #1 starts on your warranty start date (the day the car was sold) NOT the model year. Your 2006 could have been sold in 2005! Make sure to fill your tank up to know if it's leaking.

Ok, I did not know that about the FSS. Luckily I have extensive maintenance history - all receipts plus VMI report. So I can follow the maintenance intervals since I know what has been done. I bought this car last July.
I have been filling the tank and have zero issues with odor or leaking.

thanks

Well, it just happened to my car, smells like fuel in the cabin, 2003 MY.

I’ll most likely have my indy do this, do I just need the tank itself, with the fuel senders built in? Fuel pumps also need to be replaced?

thanks for the reply, question though, why is Mercedes replacing the entire tank as part of the extended warranty in addition to the pumps, senders, and adapters?

Because there is a chance the tank holes can be ovalled out and not seal properly. It seems rare but can happen. Also as I understand it, the whole tank comes pre-assembled, they just drop it in, no installing pumps and hoses in car.
