the stock exhaust note is a bit disappointing isnt it?

i thought about modding the stock mufflers or buying c/e/cls63 mufflers but i think it would be better to put that money towards headers and get a better note + hp

Agreed. I am going to go for the maintenance / rehab costs first, then go for modifications. I need to look around for videos of LTH with a stock exhaust to see what I'd be dealing with. Otherwise, may just do a cheaper muffler job until it's proper modding time...

Congrats on your E55! Welcome to the 211 family. I bought a 2006 E55 a year ago and just love the car.

I just noticed I spelled your name wrong. Sorry about that.
There’s a thread in the forum somewhere about doing all the maintenance things first. I believe Barry (bbirdwell) posted it.
Do all the maintenance first so that it’s reliable and if something isn’t right later you won’t wonder if it’s a mod you did or just a normal problem.

The exhaust topics have been beat completely to death multiple times. Hahahaha. I know there are plenty of threads on mufflers and ESPECIALLY
headers hahaha.

I want my car nice and quiet until it’s on WOT. Mine has ARH LTH, no cats, (did have race cats until recently and the sound did pick up a little when removed) X pipe, stock resonator, and stock E55 mufflers and NO DRONE. Car has made a 10sec pass like that also.

Thank you, happy to be here - so far so good! I've put 500 miles on it since I picked it up 6 days ago.

Thanks for the info. Similar route I was planning to go, letting the headers and no cats allow the exhaust to get louder instead of removing the mufflers. I read that the stock mufflers and resonators are not really restrictive anyway.... I'd like it to be well-mannered at low RPMS then scream at high RPM. I've had cars that were loud 24/7 and sometimes it's not ideal...

The resonator is wide open all the way through and also is open in the middle between both chambers.

Thanks doesn't sound too restrictive, then. Reading up on the c63 muffler swap (straight through vs chambered)and X pipe along with the LTH to give the best "OEM+" sound without going all-out racecar.

I have C63 mufflers and resonator deleted (replaced with 2 straight pipes). At idle and cruising it sounds very close to stock, but still has a bit of a rumble. Under load and WOT it just roars

I was going to replace the secondary cats with an x pipe but I think I'll want headers later on so I left the front section alone for now

Could you post or send me a video? I was considering doing that in the interim before spending big bucks on the LTH.... thanks

I don't have any videos at the moment, and the E55 is stored away so can't take any for you. I'll try to record some the next time I have the car out. But like tlambert said, there are many videos on Youtube with C63 mufflers, resonator deletes, second cats deletes, headers and different combinations of those

here are videos of when I was deleting my resonator. Still keep stock mufflers. 2nd video is final resonator deleted.

@90lxracer @jbaker sounds like the 3 of us are all in the same boat.

here are tons of great exhaust vids on youtube but i haven't been able to find any with one of the combos i'm interested in which is LTH to a completely stock exhaust. if that's got enough bark i'd probably forego upgrading mufflers.

speaking of mufflers - i think the cls55 ones are a nice upgrade and look to be about half the price of the c63 ones. check youtube for vids

jbaker - have you installed the yellow fogs yet? i was thinking of doing the same but kinda forgot about it

Yes, that is the vid I have been trying to find. e55 stock definitely too quiet for me, I like some "proof of power" via sound, lol.

Have not put in the yellow fogs yet as I may be buying totally new fog lamp assemblies bc the glass on both of mine is rock chipped to hell, so may wait until I do that. I also may be repainting the front bumper due to the plate holes and rock chips,so may wait to do all that at once. Also just realized my lower bumper 'grille' is bent so may order a new one or try to fix it.

The lights did come in, however, along with white LED for trunk, parking lights.

Tons of stuff to get done!

I have what you might be looking for in terms of combos. I have American Racing long tube headers with 200 cell race cats, stock resonator, and stock exhaust on my CLS 55.

Pros:
Added a significant amount of power and torque across the rev range
No drone at highway speeds or at all really
Nice rumble with moderate acceleration
Cold start isn't so loud to wake the neighbors but it is louder than stock
Nice and loud with that AMG V8 growl when wide open throttle

Cons:
Cost (of the headers and going to East Cost Euro solid mounts to get extra clearance)
I don't know if it is just me but I do notice that the headers are a little noisy and by that I don't mean the sound of the exhaust. From inside the car with the windows down, they can sound a little raspy like you can almost hear the valvetrain. I don't think I've seen anyone in all the LTH threads mention this but I like to be transparent. I didn't know that this is a normal sound from the thinner walls of the headers. Wrapping or coating them might help but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the info - the sound you describe maybe from the cats. Have you got a video?

definitely has more bite than bark - but that sure as hell beats the opposite!

if you check MBH's post on here from when he completed the headers a few years ago he has a vid of his brother's cls55 w just headers and it sounds amazing

@lost27 that does sound like a good combo. just realized the other day that cls55 has slightly different exhaust tone from stock

There are some threads saying that the CLS mufflers don't sit level, as in the tips kind of point upwards, but maybe a good exhaust shop/fabricator could fix that. They're not the easiest to find either, since the CLS55 was only made for 2006 (in North America anyway)

your COMBO sound; cold start LTH, x pipe, to stock exhaust. At WOT it roar but tame at idle and normal cruise.

I would do LTH, x pipe, keep resonator and delete mufflers and install J Pipe.

No, no videos yet, I should probably get on that. I think @tlambert had a thread on his ARH install and you can *kinda* hear what it sounds like from inside the cabin but that was the only video I could really find when I was looking. You might be right about the cats, a quick google around the internet showed that the 200 cell cats can make a whooshing/hissing/raspy sound.

I don’t have the vid. I’m going to update my thread within the week about the headers hitting the bottom of the floor and removal of the cats.
The vid that was posted by MSG 55 sounds pretty much like mine.

Also the description you posted as a “con” was spot on to mine. Great description on that!
