04 SL600 VS 04 E55 great runs
I am thinking about buying a SL600 and trading in my 04 E55 so I have been talking to the dealers here. I have a frenid who is a sale man at --- --- MBZ in California and his sales manager let him take the new SL600 to my home for a test drive. When the car arrived I was grinning ear to ear. We first went out to toll road did a 60MPH role on all the way to shut down 155mph the SL600 pulls so hard from 60-155 it is great. I also got to launch it 4-5 times 0-120ish. Car has hard time getting of the line. Turbo lag is offset with a high stall TQ but it still has it. After I drove the SL600 my brother did. I called his cell phone when he was out. I told I was pulling my E50 shizil out and to set up a run. We did a 0-100 run first but I let him have the mive. Big mistake the SL hand me some *** 0-100 put 2 cars on me. We race 0-120 about 3 more time after that. The SL600 never got in front of the E55 after the first run. The SL600 is fast 0-155 but 0-120 I got it number all day in fact each race I was able to launch a little better each time and by last run was able to get out at least 1 car by top of first. The SL600 was coming hard on each run. I think it was my BFG's Drag Radials help. The SL600 had 5200 miles on it dealer demo car and the E55 has 11,400 miles on it.

Had my way with them E55 and SL600
If ther are any question about the 2 cars please ask. I think I am going to buy the SL600 today and then send ECU to Oliver I think he can add like 90 Rear wheel horse to the SL600 for about $400. I will call him again today.

Not to sound too paternalistic, but it is amazing that you are able to pull off so many high speed runs on public roadways.
Although I live in a high traffic area, the opportunities to wind the car up to even 120 seem few and far between. Last I heard, traffic in Orange County is pretty dense, too. Things must have changed.

A bucket on wheels
if he leaves in orange county california then the roads, specialy some of the tolls roads are most of the time wide open streches of road with fresh grounds. Porbably the best place to drive in LA. The problem is i hear there are a lot of cops but i go there almost every weekend and havn't run into a little piggy once.

Open roads in OC
Yes the toll roads are awsome. wide open and new pavement. I have been in many top end pulls with all cars. Had nice run with an ASR viper with the E55.
The most fun ever was with the SL600 last night.

How much turbo lag is there in the SL600? I was wondering how much fun would it be to drive a V12 Twin turbo vs the V8 Supercharged. I love my E55, but this torque/power war is addicting. I love torque and want more. Just for everyday driving and not for track use, these MB amg are so awsome.

SL600 Turbo lag
It is hard to feel it because of the high stall convertor but you notice it once car hits 3000+ rpms and the wheel spin like mad. The SL600 can be thrown into a slide at will not like my e55. Even when turbos are spooling it still pulls harder than any car I have driven accept for the e55. I drove a viper asr with 100 shoot of nos and it has no torqe at all. The viper was num or dumb compared to the MBZ's.
The exhaust note is awsome on the 600 sounds like a track Supra deep and hard.

lag
The e55 burns tire from stop the 600 burns tire at middle of intersection and burns all the way thru the gear making more and more power. It suck being in an E55 and feeling like the car was broke. The SL600 just keep coming I was bagging for more as it creeps up on me.

When I floor my E55, my ESP lights up until almost 4500 rpm before total tire grip. When you floor the SL600, does it get out of the gates and then start to burn rubber at the middle of the intersection? I thought the peak torque of the V12 TT starts at 1800 which is lower than the 2600rpm of the E55. So, naturally I thought the v12TT would be harder to get out of the street light races. Although most races are from 5-15 rolling starts anyways. I saw the video of the CL65 AMG and I am just blown away with the engine.

E55 Tire Spin Very little
If you are not running BFG"s on your E55 sorry. Go get a set today. I will never own a high horse car with out them on the back. I always drive with my ESP off and I can pin it thru corners all day. If I power brake the car it will spinn up in smoke. But from a dead stop I just touch gas then floor it I get a little churp if at all. The tire just fold and go. Omce you get used to the BFG's they handle just fine. But it is a little scary at first because the BFG's roll over to there sides brefore they hook in turns. So the first week with them on you think you can not hit a corner hard but they are great. You just got to get the Stock tire feel off your *** first. One of the runs with the SL600 I left 2 wheel rubber all the way thru first but the SL600 never got in front that run was 0-60 before shut down. If no BFG's the MBZ suck from light to light. I will be running a 04 STi with all the mods tonight. He think he can hold the E55 off until 60mph I let him know that that over turbo 4 banger would only see the *** end of the E55. Will post results soon.

The SL600 does not burn off line but at middle on intersection. Yes you can make it burn. I can power brake an SL600 all day in smoke. But the best launch seemed to be power brake until 2000rpm then floor it. And hold on for tire spin and a shift.

Sounds like you had fun, we need a vid of this action! Maybe when the deal on the 600 is sealed a little "fun" with the E55 before dropping it off!

Honestly, you're either very cautious or just not looking hard enough. I have a 2.7 (so, not the S) Porsche Boxster (a helluva lot slower than an E55...not even in the same universe in fact ), and in San Diego I didn't have any trouble finding areas to get the car up to 135 easy.
Maybe you're just not looking at the right times of day, i.e. during the morning "to work" commute or the 5:00 Traffic.
If your in the southern part of Orange County, Irvine is not that far away, and there are lots and lots of open stretches there, many off the freeway too.
As for Toll Roads....are you kidding me people? There are usually TONS of cops that patrol the Toll Roads...at least the ones I've been on.
Where ever you drive fast...just be careful and wear your belt
