E63 instrument cluster in E55
Dear all,
I apologize in advance, if this has already been discussed in detail, but I have only found info that it can be done, but no details.
I am considering getting an E63 instrument cluster for my 2004 E55 for multiple reasons:
1. I understand the W211 E63 shows oil temp, while the E55 cluster does not.
2. My 2004 speedo only shows up to 160mph, which is insufficient with the speed limiter removed.
3. I intend to get a km/h instead of mph unit.
Is the E63 unit a direct swap (besides resetting and reprogramming milage)? Ir does anything else need to be modified? Wiring, connectors, sensors, etc.?
I read the suggestion to retain the E55 PCB so that mileage does not have to be programmed, but I’d assume this would not give you the additional functionality of the oil temp. Or am I wrong?
I cannot find any info on this.
thanks in advance and best regards!
Tadek

Here is an interesting read

You will need star to activate new features such as oil temp. You might be able to code that in your 55 cluster as well. From what being discussed in the threads you need to swap PCB from old cluster.
Tuners such as kleemann sells updated clusters with higher mph if you want options.

Excellent! Thanks a lot.
Can the additional features (oil temp, lap timer, battery voltage - of what I understand) be activated on any instrument cluster then?
Or does a newer SW have to be flashed to have this.
I will check into just changing the faces then.
Best regards,
Tadek

Swapping the PCB from your E55 to the E63 cluster, does not give you the AMG menu (Oil temp, Lap time, Voltage). Trust me, I've been there when I updated to the E63 cluster. All that will give you is the correct mileage and the new look, sans the upgraded features.
You need to have the E63 cluster/PCB zeroed first, and then learn the cluster to the E55 using SDS.
The AMG menu can be coded to a stock E55 cluster, but is not DIY with SDS.

So what is required to code the E55 cluster to show oil temp? Is SD or Vediamo with developer mode sufficient? I have none of it, but know people who have.
Also I understood in other threads that changing the tach coding to non linear will bring it from 160/260 to 200/320 scale. Is this correct?

Sorry OP, don't have an intention to hijack the threat but I also interested in this mode and wonder if a new cluster needs to be calibrated to show the correct speed and RPM?
