there isn't one that attaches to the Y-pipe. also not familiar with seeing any metal canister like pictured. any idea where it could be located? or if its built into the brake booster?
The metal canister is used on early M156 engines. It was replaced by the black square reservoir that sits on top of the intake manifold between the Y-pipe.
I found a pic on ebay showing the metal canister's location. It sits below the left exhaust manifold after the engine mount.
Good luck.
I have an 07 E63, and you cant get any newer than that. And I don't have that part on my engine. I recently did an upper oil pan gasket, and took detailed pictures of my engine, and I don't have this on it.

Correct, the vacuum line attachment point to the Y-Pipe is only in the revised version. This is related to @skratch77 's thread in the W204 C63 sub-forum. The few guys that made this modification keep the vacuum box up top. I was looking for the OE location to have a cleaner install.

Thank you!!
Hmm...this might be a PITA to get to.

Which Y-Pipe do you have: the one with a vacuum box in the middle or the newer one without it?

I think you might have this backwards, the Y-Pipe without the box in the middle is the old, with the box is the newer Y-Pipe. And honestly I have seen any 07-09 E63’s with this feature, but have seen them on C63’s.

Sorry, typo on my part. The text in bold is indeed the correct distinction.

Yup lol. Helping a friend install a lift this weekend and will get the car up in the air to see if there is a clear way to access that mounting location from the bottom.

you know ..this could be why I've never seen it. it's literally hidden behind my LTH completely. I went through my photo album and couldn't find a photo where I had taken without any headers.
if you're looking to retrofit, this may be troublesome as for example for newer M156 the front accessory pulleys have an additional pulley that us W211 E63's don't have. between the crank pulley and ac compressor. the mount location just simply isn't there on the front lower engine cover.
your best bet may be contacting Tasos if he is familiar with the early model M156's and this canister.
Wow, I too have been wondering what that unit was sitting driver side underneath the rear side of the exhaust manifold. I should have addressed that when I had both Heads off, but it’s good to at least now have a clue what the hell that is as I have the early W211 E63 with a production date of 6/2006 or so. I can only imagine that if it has any bits that are plastic related, it’ll probably need attention soon as I have 104k mi. on the odometer ( I purchased it with 94k in Dec.2017). It looks like one would have to remove the Header perhaps and have the replacement heater resistant tube to go in. I just wonder if the tube fits into that removable piece itself or if that piece acts a Heat Shield for another union/hose barb engine side that the tube would connect to? If so, I imagine it too would brittle and close to being already damaged away from sight obviously hidden behind that shield!
