04 e55 fuel smell

Just bought an 04 e55 yesterday. It has 127k miles. I can smell gas coming from the rear wheel well area. I’ve read that there had been a fuel tank recall but don’t know if I can still get it recalled if it’s been 15+ years. I don’t see anything on the car fax for the tank being recalled. If you have any info, please let me know. Thanks

Remove the rear seat. It has one latch on each side. Remove the two metal hatches. Fuel pumps are on the passenger side and the filter/regulator is on the driver side look for fuel. If you see fuel you have a leak and the fuel pumps and filter/regulator most likely will need to be replaced. the dealer replaces the entire tank as an assembly but virtually all the time it just requires the new pumps and filter / regulator and o-rings. Nonetheless, it is not cheap!

hey man, this is what I found. The passenger side has 0 leaks/fumes but the drivers side has a leak I think. There’s dirt/moisture and gas fumes. The driver side looks like it has been tampered with ( mismatched/missing nuts)
should I open those up?

Yes, open it up! If there is gasoline pooled on top of the plastic cap put it all back together and go talk to the dealership from where you bought it. They may be able to get away with just a new filter/regulator and an o-ring on that side. Part numbers are important! Not all filter/regulators are compatible with the two generations of fuel pumps. Read the links I provided to you earlier.

By the way, welcome to the world of the e55 amg!

If there is a leak, will Mercedes cover it under the 15 year extended warranty? I tried to look it up, but still don't know if I'm eligible.
I know I can just go to Mercedes and find out but id like to know more about the situation before make the trek there. thanks

This is on the main W211 amg forum page. Might shed some light.

I had the same issues on my 04 - think you just missed out on the 15 years but may be worth a try if you purchased from a dealer you may have a little more leverage. I replaced myself - parts are easy to source, just the connections are a little different from 04 to 05/06 so I had replace both the pump and filter module to get all connections to "plug and play"

04 is out of recall period now. If you replace the pump make sure you get the updated crossover cable or one pump will run in reverse. While you are at it pull the trunk liner and check the relay harness, they like to get crispy. The harness was changed from one 40a relay to two in the later years. You can update this to a higher amp relay, look at bbirdwell’s posts on the subject, he will be an enormous resource for the fuel related issues.

Check if the plastic ring can be tightened more. That solved my issue but I knew that my pumps were recently replaced by the previous owner.
