What models used the 649 trans? How is it different from the 643?

The V12 models had the 649 and have a different torque converter and the transmission itself has more clutch packs and is rated for 1100Nm iirc.

That's what I was thinking it likely was. Thanks for that.

Any information you can share in this would be of great help. Please do share the part number.

How much weight did you save by replacing the seats, sure it must be substantial.

Like many Japan spec car owners, I feel the audio head unit is a sore point. I’d love to shave a few kilos of the wiring as I plan to upgrade to a unit with apple CarPlay. Any tip here would be great!

Enjoy your car in the lovely Autobahns….
hello. the bypass valve can be disabled by star diagnostic equipment

You need a different base file, either clk dtm or Sl55 modelyear 2002. You can't code out the bypass valve.

in star diagnostik, I saw a function to turn off the bypass valve. Or am I mistaken?

The last couple weeks I started buying some parts for the E55. I've been wanting to upgrade my rear brakes to match the 390mm brakes on the front. So I found two rear calipers from a W212/218/204 Black Series and got them powder coated in the oem style silver colour. I replaced the dust boots and got new brake pins and pad springs from Mercedes. For rotors I got Brembo 360mm ones and paired them with Pagid Street Plus pads. For the front I changed the pads to Ferodo Ds2500 pads. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking

They complement your front brake upgrade perfectly in regards to optical styling (same type design of the caliper etc). Well done man!

You beat me to it. I too have a set of the W212 calipers. I haven't been able to get them re-power coated because no one around here knows what color to use and I can not find any AMG decals in a material that will hold up to the 400*F baking process used as part of the power coating process. Do you know or can you ask your powder coater the Hex Decal color code they used and what decal source they have? Your calipers look fantastic.

The colour name of the oem caliper is Graumetallic 7MB TAB.19.15. The powder coat guy had colour cards and took the closest silver he had

Ok, thanks for that. I'll see if what the shops I have been talking with can do with that info. Any idea on a source for the decal?

The shop had them already, i didn't supply them. On my calipers , they powdercoated the caliperr, then put the stickers on and then put clear coat over it. I got the front ones done 2 years ago and they still look good

Yes, those steps are what I want done also. But, sourcing the decal has proven difficult. They all seem to be nylon which would melt in the curing process.

Now that you have had some time with the upgraded rear calipers and rotors, what impressions do you have of the braking now? Those rear calipers have much larger pistons and with the increased rotor diameter, it seems that the braking bias would be noticably more to the rear than in the past.

Well dang, that's got to be frustrating. Let us know when you can do a proper test of your good work.

Since I haven't updated this thread in a good while, I'll bring it up to date. I unregistered the E55 in October 2023 and parked it in my garage. It's been sitting there for over a year now since I started my master certified tech course this year.

However in May I sold the CLS500, which I was using as a daily, because I wanted something more compact and less boaty. So in June I bought the most clapped out C55 in europe. I have been fixing, restoring and modding that car since June. It's been a true challenge, but feels kind of rewarding, knowing I'll have rebuilt most of the car myself, when I'm done.

If there's an interest, I'll cross post the updates on that car here. The thread is located here:

Please cross post. I saw the thread title in "new posts" but passed on it as it was a C55. Sorry!
I didn't realize it was you. For what it is worth, when you post I read. You provide valuable technical and historical information on our Mercedes vehicles. I like to think I am knowledgeable about Mercedes. You, however, always bring new and interesting information to the party and I thank you for that.
So ... please cross post.

I've been quite busy with this car. The C55 is almost naked now and we'll be replacing a part of the upper beam on it, since it was all bent to an unrepaired accident damage.I took out the front subframe with drivetrain and the rear subframe. The interior is also out and it's pretty much just the chassis with some wires left. I don't think it's too often, that you can see a chassis this empty, so here you go
