I put together a .pdf of instructions with lots of photos for removal of the "sliding cover" center console and replacement of the shift lever position detection sensor.

Note the console removal instructions attached are NOT for the hinged cover center consoles; they use an entirely different procedure!

Removal and replacement of the shift lever position detection sensor will be the same for the W211 shift modules. Different part numbers out there but there are rebuilders/repairers listed on Ebay. Perform a search on "w203 w209 w211 Gear Lever 2095452232 2115452932 2115451932 Repair Service" and you can find one. FWIW, I purchased my refurbished sensor module from a private individual on Ebay who had a spare repaired sensor module. I do intend to ship my old defective sensor to user "aboldt" of "Kalishnakov Bayonets Shop" for repair.

EDIT: After reinstalling the center console, you will need to reset the temperature settings for the rear seat heat/cool controls. Mine defaulted to maximum heat upon reassembly; I was wondering why my air conditioning was having such a hard time cooling the car!

This was a huge help and is greatly appreciated. I don't know if you still are active on this forum, but I wanted to say thanks for the effort from years ago. Based on what I'm finding out, a lot of owners (both old and new owners) of these old E55's are having this problem right now, and this is very helpful. Cheers! James
