This place is a joke.
I've driven two E55's with coilovers and both rode like shi*. The airmatic is superior, and there's really no reason to get rid of it, other than owning a car you can't afford. With the Arnott options, or new Billstein struts, it's not a big deal. Last year around 150k miles I installed reman Arnott fronts, arnott rears, new oem compressor and valve block. I'm good for many years now. I can raise my car over speed bumps, lower it with DAS/STAR, and change the stiffness with the pushbutton. Airmatic also does other things most aren't aware of. It prevents dive on braking and more.

2003 SL55,2020 GTC ,2017 GTS sold ,2002 G500 Sold,2003 SL500 Sold,
I held off on this forever with my SL55 which has Hydraulic shock set up , I finally switched, not because I had any current issues , because I wanted to hook at the track, the ride is the exact same , I opted for KW coil overs and have both VVT sway bars installed, only thing I can complain about is not being able to raise and lower the car and after a few drives I was over that ,

The ABC system on that car is a nightmare when it gets old, and is very expensive, unreliable, and labor intensive to repair. Switching to coilovers (and adding sway bars) is justified. For the much simpler airmatic system on the E55, I wouldn't do it.

That's kind of how I feel. I came to the same conclusion after looking into some W220 M275 cars. But rather than buy one and convert it, I'll just stick to the E-class.

That’s more of an opinion than anything. The coilovers give you peace of mind NOT failing you when least expected. Ride quality is subjective, as is your feeling of airmatic being superior. I prefer the coilovers to airmatic. Why keep fixing the same problem with the same failing parts?

It's experience more than opinion. With 19 years working on Mercedes, I feel pretty qualified. 😉

You said you have only ridden in 2 55s with coilovers tho… that’s not a whole lot of experience imo. Airmatic and cooling were/are the biggest issues with 55s. Fixing one issue permanently should be a no brained… Each to his own tho. Stay safe
