HRE 847's installed

I got my 847's installed recently. I am very happy with them. There was one problem with the install though. HRE puts the valve stems on the inner barrel and the front was hitting the caliper. The solution I used was a hideaway valve stem. You carry it with you (I put it with the wheel lock) and if you need it you just screw it in. Very elegant solution IMO. I will include pics to better explain.

second pic. My wife doesn't like them. You can see her wheels on the Escalade in the background. While my new house will have enough garage space to get all the cars in, this one doesn't. Guess which overpriced Tahoe (with it's heavy, bling-bling 22's) gets to sit outside in the hurricanes in the mean time.

Here's the valve stems with the stem removed and with it on.

The wheels are 18x9.5 ET36 with 275/35 18 Pilot Sport PS2 tires in the rear and 18x9 ET38 with 265/35 18 PS2's on front. Turn in is much sharper and the car doesn't push like it did stock. Side affect is that you notice the lack of roll resistance a bit more now. Ride is the slightest bit (very slight) harsher.

The wheels look good. You do not see many 840R series on the E class. Usually, it is the 540R series. But they look great. The wheel definately look larger then 18s due to the no fasteners. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for compliments. To answer a few questions, I would have gotten 19 inch, but the car already is borderline with little things like the passenger headrest vibrating on the highway. If that got any worse, it would cheapen the feel of the car to me. I also wanted 265's up front to help with the massive understeer. In 19 inch I would be looking at a 255. In the end, the drawbacks were not worth it. I really wasn't that unhappy with the stock wheels. If the rears filled up the fender a little better (like if there was a 9.5 ET36 available) I would have just put the rear on front and gotten new wheels for the back.

I bought them from the people I got my Vette HRE's from. Had them installed at Good Roads in Fort Lauderdale. I would highly recommend Good Roads for custom wheels. Minimally for the install. If I had gone anywhere else, They likely would not have had a solution for my valve stem problem and I would have been stuck sending the wheels back to HRE to await their solution.

I must say for 18" wheels those look pretty well sized..

a few questions though, is it really the case when you put wider tires in front it helps with understeer? I always thought the thinner the better for the fronts.

Smaller tires usually help with the steering effort. That allows less assist and in turn gives better feel. The problem is that the front of the E55 carries alot of weight and it's tires are not really up to the task. Going to a 265 accomplishes 2 things. It adds grip to help with the understeer, and the 265's I used have a much higher load rating. They help the steering feel more direct, even in everyday driving.
