Tire wear? 10,000 miles only?

Hi, folks!

I hate tire noise. I have the stock Continentals on my E55 and am about ready to get my third set at 20,000 miles. First set 10,000 miles, second set 10,000 miles. The tires "sing" at 10,000 miles. I get very grumpy.

Any suggestions?

Michelin Pilot Sports better at being quiet?

Others experiencing the same?

Thanks!

Can't speak for the new Pilot Sports but mine *sang* after 10-12 K and are still hanging in there at nearly 19 K. Not much left though ...

I have 13k on my conti tires and they are loud and ride poorly (they never were any good really). I have read great things about the PS2's so I will get those very soon. The conti is a terrible tire and its just a way for mb to save a few bucks on the car. The PS2's are a bit more money but they are far more grip, last longer, ride better, and look better too.

The GS-D3 F1's also fit the car and are a great tire. The only issue there is that they are good to only 155 mph while the others are good to 186. This is more of an issue in Germnay than here but wanted to give you all the info.

I would go for anything BUT conti here

After 2 flats, one a blow out and 8,000 miles I took the Conti's off and put on PS2's. I'm not kidding when I say that it handles like a different car!! Knowing what I know now, I would take the Conti's off as soon as I bought the car. If you're buying an $85,000 car the least you can do is spend another $1,000 and put the proper tires on. There is not an option you can buy that is better for that car than these tires.

The Michelin Piloit Sport 2's will make you feel like you are driving a new car. Handling is increased immensly and they are very quiet. I would go to the next tire store and get these bad boys as soon as you can.

Any opinions on Bridgestone S03's? I'm getting them when I step to 19"s next month...

I have the SO-3's as well as the PS2's and the stock conti's on hand. Having the SO-3's when I had my E500 I was familiar with that tire. After having my E55 for two weeks I was amazed how bad the conti's were, and removed them. Hearing great things about the PS2's I purchased a set, and everything I heard was confirmed. Comparing them to the SO-3's I would say the dr/wet traction is very close. The PS2's are much quieter and a little smoother riding. Either one is a great choice. The SO-3 is probably a bit cheaper as well. My .02

Has S03's put on my 2001 CLK 430 when they first came out, the tires flat spotted very easily, the Pilots are a much smoother tire as mentioned above.

I'm one of satisfied S03 users..... no complaints at all... good grip, last quite long.... IMO, much better than original Pilot Sports....

Never tried either tires on wet conditions..... never drive the car during or after the rain (honest )

No clue about PS2 other than good comments from other ppl. Willing to try when the time comes and the price is not far from S03.

RJC, what do you mean w/ "the tires flat spotted very easily"? Do you mean a flat spot after letting the car sit for one week or so? If so, I think all high-perf tires are like that..... I experience the same thing (makes the steering wheel vibrates) but it's gone after ~10-15 minutes driving the car. So no biggie for me.

Got occasional flat spotting even after car sat for a several hours and always overnight. Steering wheel shimmied and car had slight vibration for 3-4 miles then stopped after tires smoothed out every morning on the way to work. I had the tires checked for out of roundness and balanced by two seperate MB dealers with the new Hunter force balancer...it did not change until I switched to Pilots. I spoke to one of the tech guys at the tire rack and he acknowledged the problem was more pronounced with S03's and I got a full credit toward the Pilots. Keep in mind 2 important things; I got the S03's when they first came out and I live in S. FL where the roads get very hot, so when you park on indoor cold concrete flat spotting becomes more of an issue, regarless never had any of these problems with Pilots on any of my cars including my 04 CLK500, almost 10,000 miles and counting. The P Zeros rossos that came on my 03 were better at this than the S03's but still flat spotted a bit...the Pilots are #1 in my book.

I had the SO3s and found them to be a bit noisier. I have the PS2s and like them better than the SO3s. I also have the Dunlop SP Sport 9000 on my other vehicle and they are also great tires.
