I have a 2006 CLS55 AMG (US model) and When checking my oil level through my dash it will never read the level. I just keep getting the --- lines. I did the procedure exactly as outlines multiple times and get no reading whatsoever. Is this indication of a bad level sensor?
If anyone knows the secrets of the oil level check system, maybe they can also explain why mine never tells me to add a quart while driving. I always have to query the level with engine off and then it will tell me to add a quart or whatever. I thought it was supposed to come on while driving.
There are two ways I interact with mine and this is super old hat for the W211 cars:
- Ignition to position 1 (or one press of KG button, foot NOT on brake). Scroll to whatever the main menu is and then press arrow up. It will say whether oil level is OK, too high or too low and what to do.
- Ignition to position 1 (or one press of KG button, foot NOT on brake). Press cluster button 3 times. Press arrow button up (or down, I forget). Ignition switch to position 2 (or press KG button again, foot NOT on brake). It will give you an actual quantity which in my experience is not the true number. Should read ~7.7 or 7.8 quarts after an oil change. On mine when it gets down to about 6.8 it will say to add 1 quart in the OTHER menu so this seems quite consistent.
It just makes me do all of this if I want to understand my oil level, which is annoying. But I don't have the --- issue like the OP....
When waiting for it to read the oil level it can take an age. I either use the sub-menu and get a oil qty in litres or, if I am at home use my dipstick.
I have a dipstick and I don't like the way it reads. It's not consistent. The oil level sensor works well for me but I just wish it would tell me while driving to add a quart next fuel stop. It has done so a grand total of ONE TIME the entire time I've owned it and that was on my drive home after initial puchase....2+ years ago. Weird.
Mine has never once displayed the oil level in either of the menus. I assume my sensor is bad and will probably change it out next oil change. I got the oil checking tool to monitor oil levels cause when I changed it I only got about 7 quarts out of the car and I do t know when the previous owner changed the oil last.
Well in case anyone has this issue on the future I have figured it out. Apparently my central gateway was replaced with one out of a W211 with a European spec M257 and not properly coded to the correct model. My oil level now works..
