California Compliant Catalytic Converters?

Well, I have owned my car for over 10 years now and since then I have lived in many countries and states that did not require certain compliances. Fair enough, I met the standard of those states and countries. Well, now im catless, moved back to California and I am happy to comply but the rule system is kinda wild. It does not appear I can simply buy catalytic converters and have them installed. In fact the rule system is so completely bananas I am feeling more inspired to figure out a way to cheat since they have made it so difficult to comply. That being said if anyone knows of a CARB approved Cat for our cars that I can simply purchase and have installed that would be great! If not...yanno...ill go another route.

not sure about the E55, but for the E63, no aftermarket ones work for California as the factory is still remanufacturing them for sale. in California, if the vehicle manufacturer continues to off new or remanufactured catalytic converters, aftermarket catalytic converters cannot be certified for that vehicle.

Unfortunate. I dont understand how passing the sniff test isnt exactly inline with the intent of the program. I dont mind placing some cats on the car but simple economics says paying several thousands for OEM parts when a laundry list of affordable and practical universal parts exist is bureaucracy in its most annoying application... or spend a few hundred to a guy/registering it out of state makes the decision....easy.

Alternatively the car may have to go for sale. I dont want to find myself on the wrong side of california code and end up with it in state possession.

I understand compliance by inconvenience...but Cali sets the bar to level 11 absurd if say the military brings you to a state with weird laws.

good luck and hopefully you can sort it out. these AMG's are amazing cars then as they are now and not many can replace them.

First of all I would like to say thank you for your service. But some of your comments don't actually pass the sniff test. Makes me wonder if you have a little Jack Teixeira in you. The federal law has been pretty clear in all states. You're not supposed to mess with the cats period. Other states don't really pay attention to if you do or not. But having done it, you should have been prepared to undo it as you never know what the future may hold. You could have held onto the old ones in case you needed them, probably would have been cheaper than buying new ones. You can't really buy used ones, but there's some guy in the for sale forum that buys used ones. I always wondered if that was a code thing for him selling used ones too although that too is against federal law.

With that said, I can't really say you have any grounds to complain that Cali has a weird law, they just want maximum compliance. I'd have no trouble passing as my cats are all stock and I still have them and they still work.

Think about it, it's the exact same thinking of criminals who get caught, their thinking is that they would have gotten away with it if it weren't for whatever, but maybe they shouldn't have done the crime in the first place instead of griping about things.

Speaking of used cats, what do you know, someone actually posted them for sale in the for sale forum.
