M113K Supercharger silencer delete too obnoxious for daily use?
Hi, I recently blew my engine on my car and am currently rebuilding it. So I was considering adding a bit of spice into the newly reborn car by doing a supercharger silencer delete. (my mechanic says something about welding a port shut)
But this car is indeed a daily for me and I would love to hear from others who have done similar things. Does the supercharger whine gets loud enough to be annoying on the highway? When does the whine begin to ramp up? Under normal driving I wouldn't Rev past 3k rpm so if the supercharger whine under 3k isn't bad, I would happily do this mod. Does anyone have an idea of how it's gonna pan out? If anyone have a link on YouTube of how it's gonna sound, it would be great if you could share it.
And what the heck is a "supercharger silencer"? Are you talking about the intercooler valve plate that operates mirror image to the throttle body valve? We're talking different languages here...

He's talking about welding closed the 2 open slots at the supercharger outlet. There were some posts way back when about it, that they exist for silencing the whine but I don't think anyone really knows what they do.
Yep, its a common mod for superchargers. Also on the Mini Cooper S I used to have. But my best guess it wont make too much of a difference, as the charger isnt loud to begin with (twin screw). The roots supercharger on my Mini Cooper was already quite loud (whine noise).
The blower will pick up in a higher pitch and become much louder. When I did some porting/cleaning up inside we welded the silencer holes closed and reshaped that part a little.
Nobody should be daily driving an E55 at this point.
I bought mine specifically for long distance trips between California and Nevada. I put hundreds of miles on it at a time. I love it as my daily. That said, I would not use it as my daily if I had to pay someone else to work on it.
