oil leak from the oil filter housing

So I just changed the oil and I noticed that there was an oil leak from the top of the oil filter housing. What could it be? perhaps the o-rings were defective? should i just replace those? or I am just not torquing it down enough? Any other suggestions?

Oil filter housing is 25Nm. Double check that the O-ring sits in the right slot of the filter housing.

Seems like you have more leaks if I see the amount of sticky sand in that picture alone

I really do hope that is not the O-ring sticking out from under the edge of the cap! If it is, fix ASAP! If not, blame it on my computer monitor.

Photo of o-ring positions are in this article:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...Oil_Change.htm
The socket that fits on the oil cap is a critical tool to own.

I think that is exactly what it is. The big o-ring is not housed correctly. it doesn't lose oil till its running and luckily only a little. I have only driven it for 30 minutes or so. I am wondering if I should just re-do the oil change after fixing the o-ring or just top it a little.

Just replace the o-ring, measure oil via instrument cluster and, if it shows a oil low, add oil.

As far as I am aware, a 9 quart reading is too high. I have never run mine higher than 8.5, but the car will show "level ok" with about 7.5 quarts shown. Don't overfill it. You will get a warning message to add a quart if it is too low.

The O-ring does not sit at the end but sits about an 1/8 from the end of the stem. Look carefully, there is a grooved area for the O-ring to sit. It's a mistake to slide the O-ring to the end, if you do it will leak and blow out!

I use the Mann oil filters which includes all the o-rings and has a diagram for the large o-ring.

Im seeing some scratches on that cap, wondering if something other than an oil filter wrench was used on it. Have to be careful, they can deform and break easy. First time i went to change the oil I couldn't get the cap off by hand and didn't have an oil filter wrench, got my huge pliers out and placed a towel over the cap to prevent damage. i sisnce got an oil filter wrench. Have to be careful if ordering cheap ones off Amazon though, i ended up returning two for not fitting properly before i finally got one that did and they were all listed as fitting Mercedes.

Also, its worth replacing the 2 gaskets between the 2 halves of the oil cooler and the gasket on the bottom of the oil cooler housing (buy this one original, has the best fitment!)

I once had an oil change and they overtightened the cap which cracked the lip. Car lost lots of oil when running but nothing visible before that. New cap solved the leak.

I also put in a new cap not too long ago. After 18 years it was time for the original one to retire

Besides over tightening (pet peeve #1) it's real easy to gouge the plastic where the oring sits if you use a flat head screwdriver to remove it. Drives me nuts when I see someone doing it...
