Any E55 owners ordering an M5?
Have any E55 owners who are mbworld board members ordered a new M5? I'm tossing and turning on this one. I know the M5 is a challenge to look at, but I'm impressed with the early road reports. Are others agonising too?
I'll wait and see it and drive it (buddy of mine is #2 on the list here).
Acceleration? E55.
Exterior styling? E55.
Interior styling? E55.
Daily driving capability? E55.
Price? E55.
Resale? E55.
My wife has had nothing but BMW's most of her life and I really like BMW's historical market niche, but there is NOTHING BMW currently manufactures that I'd touch. Nada.
The E55? It's just grown and grown on me over the past year.
Is it flawless? Of course not. And the less than stellar handling is annoying at times. But I'd miss the E55 badly if I were forced to drive an M5 from here forward.
MAN is that 5 body style ugly. I was looking at one carefully today in a lot.
BMW just plain whiffed on the 5 style--and the inside of the 5 and 7 is worse than the exterior.
I actually feel sorry for Bimmer-philes. They had so much to love and be proud of prior to 2002.

Exterior styling? Subjective.
Interior styling? Id rather take the E55/CLS55 one with a more sporty theme, not that important to me thought.
Daily driving? Equal in my opinion.
Price? Definately M5.
Resale? Hard to say...
You're wrong about the M5 and E55 "neck and neck" at low speeds. That's the E55's strong suit (and why it's more fun as a daily driver in urban areas).
Styling is, of course, a matter of personal taste. I find it interesting, though, that virtually every car magazine (and most mags are strongly biased toward BMW as a marque over Mercedes since MB hasn't traditionally been a 'driver's car') complains and moans about the 5 series styling. I have YET to see a complimentary summary.
The M5 will be a great driver's car, no question. I find it very surprising, though, that BMW failed to raise the bar over the E55's straight line performance standard which Mercedes laid down over 2 years ago. The old M5 was clearly superior to the prior generation (w210) E55. Mercedes overtook BMW with the new E55 and BMW failed to recapture the "lead", it would appear.
That's a significant event in the history of the 2 rival companies.
The E55 is sooo damn nice to look at. Especially the pics in the mag, the M5 doesn't come close to the sharp looks of the E55.

I haven't seen anything conclusive which shows the M5 is either faster or slower than the E55! Other than the M5 v CLS55 which is a bit heavier than the E55 (85kg) but rated the same by MB.
In that case the M5 matched the CLS down low but pulled up high, i'd expect a similar result but a bit closer up high.
just a logical guess though.I'm going to wait for a proper test to show the real results.
I don't think its unreasonable to assume that if someone wants a car purely for straightline performance and comfort the E55 is the pick, becasue it does it with less fuss! I also find it funny that people haven't come to terms with the fact that although in the same bracket the M5 and E55 are different tools and as such the choice should be straightforward.

About the price, its definately going to be higher than the old one but Im almost certain that the price is going to be lower than the E55 simply because of them being competitors. With less as stantard but still cheaper. Im guessing around 85k.
amg55, if you want a complimentary summary: http://www.autocarmagazine.com/RoadT...p?RT_ID=212071. Autocar says 'that it might just be the best car in the world'.

From my casual observation, the loudest M5 fans come here to simply defend their fantasy car, with most of them having absolutely no plans to buy one.
We are the ones having to part with our hard earned money to live with the ugly shape and cheap interior and deal with the serious shortcomings.
