New Motor Trend (E55 vs. M5)
I noticed that the 0-60 and the 1/4 mile time is faster with the E55 even though the specs on the M5 are better.
I'm sure the M5 will be a great car...but I can't drive a magazine article.
Love what you got today because tomorrow is never a guarantee...
1. has a FAR better interior
2. It is easier to go effortlessly fast in the E55
I didn't think it bashed the E55, none of us bought it to be able to handle like a Lotus Elise. The SMG and the "Lateral Ability" of the M5 were the source of most of the praise, that and the engine of course. It just solidified what we all already know:
1. The E55 is a "nicer" car with better amenities and style (subjective, I know)
2. They will be close in performance with the M5 having the upper-hand 120+
3. In the twisties we'll be left back faaaaar behind

But....
It's still ugly.

That M3 spent all article getting it's *** whipped up one side of the track and down the other by the Z06, but when it came down to the end, the MotorTrend BMW nuttswingers declared the M3 "winner" beacuse it had a back seat. WTF?? That ended my subscription (and a ****load of other people's as well from what I hear and read).
Anyways . . . MotorTrend is notoriously BMW-biased . . . don't think that will ever stop (at least while the BMW favors and $$$ are still rolling in).
They should have at least mentioned that a new steering rack and possible Suspension recalibration is coming the E55's way. I am sure they are aware how that change has been made on the CLS55 and can most likely be made on the E55 as well, or can't they obtain that most journalistic type of information?
It's funny that if DC does make those changes on the E55, the US will get to drive with the new hardware before the M5 even is close to our shores...
And for the US driver, how many of us race from 100-150 mph? I keep reading how the BMW wins that contest, a useless fact in America. On the other hand, a stoplight race is a daily affair.
But when we buy AMG cars, we expect exceptional performance. Not just a faster engine. We want the whole load, just as M cars get the entire deal.
Still, kicks *** that just with an extra engine, the M5 is recieving a big fist in the face.

Fist in face, very good way of putting it, all that V10 noise to 100 mph and it will still loose! :p
Nothing like the sound of a tuned V8.
Is L/C something you can do every day at the stop light, or are you limited to the number of times you can use it like the M3?
Mercedes can really turn their cars into real street rippers. They have the engines, they have the parts, they have the ability to make parts as well, go ahead AMG, take the initiative, we're right here to buy!
I think fist is almost an understatement. 516ft-lb torque is more like a fricken sledgehammer to the face. Especially that ugly face.
The times so far are still estimates, the M5 better be a full second faster then the E55, otherwise I think people will have wasted a good two years waiting.

, even a fanboy like me doubts the new M5 could do 0-60 faster than an Enzo. From 0-124mph it just short of a sec faster.
"Fist in face, very good way of putting it, all that V10 noise to 100 mph and it will still loose."
All that torque and still will loose 120mph+ and below 100mph the perofomance differences are so marginal its a competition between drivers... And the sound is the whole point
I actually was referring to 0-60 becaues I think that's where the majority of most races will be at.

Ah man, I feel sorry for BMW fans. Not only is their car just a margin faster (if..) it's also ugly.
I am not saying the M5 will be slow at low rev's, just trying to make a small point that for me, lots of torque down low in the rev band is usually more safisfying in day to day driving. You get the immediate "punch in the back" without having to wind the motor up and risk every cop with his window rolled down looking your way.

ie. M5 and not E55. I dont know about your slowass highways but 124 is far from insanity on highways, not something I recommend doing daily thought...I dont know what your smoking but expecting the M5 to beat the E55 by a second in 0 to 60 is just stupid (I know Im sugar coating but this is a moderated forum).
Frankly from 0 to anything is not really important, rolling starts are what matter to me and there the M5 shines and completely "owns" the E55 from what Ive seen. As always looks are subjective, subjective and once again subjective. I like it you dont, get over it. I dont ***** and moan about the CLS looks even thought I dont like it...
I wonder how those drivers felt climbing into the car after the repeated brake failures? "Better take it easy boys, don't want to end up in the wall!"
Must have been the driver's fault??? All of them.
