Took a chance and told dealer about Renntech upgrades

My car was going in for the "stalling" issue with a regional tech scheduled to come in and take a look. My SA knew about the ECU/pulley. Spoke to the foreman before leaving the car to describe what goes on when it's gonna shut off. Told him about the upgrades and he got a very nervous look on his face. He told me the MB guys are usually very conservative and don't like it. I told him I could document that it was stalling before I did the mods.

Well, this was last Friday and did not hear a word until this afternoon. I figured if I hadn't heard from them my warranty should be safe! Went to pick it up and spoke to the foreman. They replaced the crank sensor and we'll hope that solves the problem.

I thanked the foreman and he turned to walk away. He stopped and said "oh yeah, the tech wanted me to thank you for him, he really appreciates that you were upfront about the mods. We hate it when people try to hide it"

In this case, honesty was the best policy

Good to hear. I'm of the opinion that honesty is always the best policy. Too often, many people figure that hte cost of modding is only parts and labor for install. I feel that the cost of modding is higher than that. I always budget for what happens if things go wrong. If I can't deal with the costs - than I shouldn't be playing.

That's cool. Glad your dealer came through for you and looking forward to a follow-up report regarding your (hopefully eliminated) stalling issue. I never had the stalling issue with my current car, sure hope I don't have to deal with it on the new one.

My dealer actually offers the Renntech ECU/pulley upgrade as an aftermarket accessory upgrade, with warranty. The latter supposedly matches the factory warranty. OTOH, they aren't listed as an official Renntech installer, so perhaps the matter is academic. It's just one of many options I'm considering - haven't read the fine print yet.

The problem is that not every MB owner is a mechanical engineer and I think sometimes they get nervous because if the dealer starts to lean towards a modification as a culprit for a particular problem they (the MB owner) won't be able to debate it because he's just not that technically savvy.

I had this problem with an Audi friend of mine, who took his car to the dealership and tried to tell him his reverse synchro going bad had something to do with the chip he had, which is absolute rubbish. Needless to say it got fixed without problems once I helped him out a bit and he knew that there's no way one had anything to do with the other.

Good work!

Plus it is kind of hard to hide things from good tech's.

Do you think they took you VIN# and recoreded it for future reference. I wonder if they do that when they find out about the mods.
