CL55 or S55?
I sold my beloved E55
My wife and I were discussing my next purchase and she would like for me to get a S55 (she called me selfish if I didn't buy that car).
Today, Spero (04E55 AMG) met up with me and we drove the S55. We both had the same conclussion...although the car felt like it handled better than the E55, we both felt no as confident in lane changes. Power wise, it felt not as fast either...maybe because it's so damn quiet.
I was not quite convinced that the S55 was for me...then I drove the CL55 and liked it more...back seat was a joke though.
Which would you get?

Personally in either of those body styles and price ranges I wouldn't get the 55. I would get the 600 with the amg package, and wouldn't care which one it was, they are very different and will do different things. I'd probably get the S since it weights the same and will be just as fast. The CL does look better, but it can't seat 5.

I am surprised to hear that you thought the S handled better than the E. that's scary!
maybe Spero's right. How about the Bentley. Hell, it's not our money!!

Drove a 2005 S55 w/Alex and was not impressed (I currently drive a 04 E55 for the last 14 months). It suprises me that this car does not come with the nice head liner or the 4 zone climate control. The MB sales person told me that the S55 does not have these comfort features since it is not the top dog model (S600 get these upgrades). The E55 gets all this since it is the top dog in the E lineup.
Bang for your buck the E55 is a BIG steal. Having the E55 and the S55 side by side today the S55 is NOT that much longer. You have a much roomier cabin since the trunk in the S55 is half the size of the E55. You give up trunk space for a bigger back seat. Paying a min. of $30K more does not make sense to me since I have no need to have adults in the back on a regular basis.
First hand input from having both cars next to each other.

All relative Is 14 inches a big deal? Based on what I saw with regards to the trunk, it is hard for me to agree with that trunk space. Alex and I both saw the trunks side my side and the E looked so much bigger. The E's trunk is so much deeper then the S's.
Just my hands on observations from being in the field with both cars next to each other.
Actual overall length of the E is 190.3 in and the S is 203.1 (2004 AMG BooK)
Actual overall width of the E is 71.3 in and the S is 73.1
Actual Heights are the same
I just always assumed the S class was so much bigger then the E and it is not.

one of seven
though I like the exterior looks of the S class the interior looks dated to me and as someone stated big changes are ahead. I drove the S55 before the E55 and it felt a little boatish (big car) to me. The CL55 is one of my favorite looking MB's though still the same dated (IMHO) interior as the S.

I guess after reading all the responses that if I were in your position, I would hold onto the E55 (which you already sold) until the new designs come out. Then, I would make my decision over the new AMG CL-Class, AMG S-Class, or AMG E-Class. If they are going to do a redesign within a year or two, I would wait it out (although I have little patience).

The CL55 doesn't really strike me as much as the S55. If you were after 2 doors, then get the SL55. S55 is comfortable, very decent performance but adding the toys comes at a price. Ours is fully loaded minus Designo+Distronic and its great, the new S63/65 AMG will not be out till 2007, if the new shape comes out in 2006.

I am on the list for the new 4 door Bentley (derived from the GT). My dealer tells me that they are trying to keep the price point at around $145,000 as they want to be competative with the S600. It will be out before the end of the year in England with arrivals here in the states beginning around December January. I would wait and see the Bentley if she has convinced you that you'll look like a nancy boy.
