Will the W212 Come With Turbos for 2011?
I read the article last year where someone at MB (forgot his title) said that for the 2011 Model Year all MBs will have twin-turbo engines.
Specifically the E-Class will have 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8s with the AMG having a more powerful version.
Months have now passed and I haven't heard any more statements from MB or seen testing spy shots or news from the auto websites & magazines about the TT V8.
Moreover, replacing the W212's 6.2 liter after only one year seems a bit odd because I would expect MB to put in the 5.5 TT when the W212 has its next facelift so they can attract even more customers.
Furthermore, the new CLS AMG is also supposed to retain the 6.2 (I haven't heard otherwise).
So, I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything new about when the TT V8 (in 550 and E55 guise) will be put into the W212.
In fact, I haven't heard any new news about what model and what Model Year will be the first to get the TT V8.

I have not heard anything new, all of the car media/mags/websites seem to be focusing on the new BMW M5 w/TT V8. Perhaps MBZ doesn't have any new news for us...I would think a spy shot or news leak would have occurred by now if MBZ was to release a new TT V8 for 2011...that model year isn't that far away now.
BTW excellent use of bold font in your post.

Got my answer!
Basically:
1. HP is at 536 and 590 torque in the base AMG engine.
2. A Performance Package engine will have 563 hp with 664 torque.
3. Still using the 7 speed transmission (apparently it was either beefed up or can handle a lot of torque).
4. SL63 will be the first to get the AMG TT engine in the summer.
5. The CLS and S classes will get the non-AMG TT engine first.
6. No word on when the other models will get the TT engine.
Up to 420kW (571 PS / 563 bhp) with AMG Performance Package

Mercedes-Benz has released details regarding its new lightweight 5.5-litre twin turbo V8 engine. The engine was speculated upon late last year and now is confirmed as reality. It will be used in certain AMG models, the first being the S 63 AMG from this summer.
The new 5.5-litre, codenamed the M157, replaces the current 6.3-litre (6208cc) naturally aspirated V8 which has been doing duty in cars like the C 63 AMG, the CLS 63 AMG, the E 63 AMG, the S 63 AMG and the CL 63 AMG.
Power is rated at 400kW (544 PS / 536 bhp) at 5,500rpm and peak torque is a massive 800Nm (590 lb-ft) made between 2,000rpm and 4,500rpm. An even more powerful version with the AMG Performance Package of the 204kg engine will produce 420kW (571 PS / 563 bhp) and 900Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. Both will be mated to Merc's 7-speed MCT transmission which helps the less powerful model achieve 26.9mpg (UK) in average fuel consumption.
According to Autocar, a smaller 4.6-litre version of the engine, also sporting two turbos, will be used for the new CLS and S-Class derivatives later this year.

yes this news did pissed me a bit.. especially that it came out only a few weeks after my purchase.
I think this engine will probably make its way into W212 during the minor facelift tho.. but thats just my guess

i personally knew this was coming, but still didn't want to wait. maybe i take consolation in the exhaust note of the 2010, which i'm almost certain will not be matched by the tt

Unless you can get super good discounts on the W212 right now, then you should really wait. But they are still too close to MSRP as of today.
Some of us here bought left over 2009 W211s when the W212 was announced only because we bought them for the price of a regular E550 (or even a heavily optioned E350.) Prices were at 30k+ off (I got mine at 29k off in May of 2009.) People who bought new W211s at close to MSRP just a year before felt cheated. Same sort of thing is going on now.
The same deep discounting may happen eventually with the current W212s. So unless you prefer a n/a motor there's no reason to buy a W212 right now. It doesn't make sense. Sit tight and patiently wait until the FI W212 is officially announced and then make your decision. Just my 2 cents........

Since the lease on my 08 expires next Feb, I'll probably go with the S550 (hopefully it will have the 4.6 TT by then) for two years and when the TT in the E class AMG comes out I will switch to that.
Hopefully I won't be too accustomed to the interior room of the S class that I will be unwilling to move back to a mid-size sedan.

I took a close look at a 212 E63 the other day and was again disappointed w/the interior quality...for some reason something as stupid as an Alcantara headliner makes a big difference. I hope MBZ will go back to a more luxurious interior for the FI 55...not that the current 212 isn't high quality, just a different feel.

The reason for the low traffic is because there are not too many W212 E63 owners yet..... the same thread has seen very high traffic in the W211 AMG section, W204, etc....
I do agree though that I would not feel right if I bought a 2010 E63 and in less than 2 years time, the engine gets replaced with a newer one (especially one that has a huge modding potential)

You think? I doubt MB really goes by modding popularity. If they put the new engine in for the 2011, I would be really seems like by even releasing this data on the new engine they are

I think what's really happening with MB (and also everybody else) is the pressure of emissions and fuel economy regulations. The TTs with DI will solve those concerns. So I'm assuming for manufacturers, the sooner the better for them.
The added benefit is that you'll have folks who want FI motors in their AMGs for the modding potential and that includes potential BMW new F10 M5 customers. MB wins both ways.

No, MB doesn't care about modding popularity specifically but I just meant that a lot of folks here with E55s see the n/a 6.2 as a step backwards.

22.4 mpgs...I cant fathom that at this stage. Will be a new experience for sure not having to deal with 12 mpg

I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't really want the TT5.5. In fact, the reason I'm on this forum/considering the E63 is that I don't want a TT car. I will be buying/ordering around December '09 or January '10. I talked to a pretty informed person/dealer here in Houston who has heard that the 5.5TT will be for 2012 in the E. Also, MB has already announced that the 2011 E63 wagon will be coming to the US with the current engine... So, reading between the lines, I'd say this dealer is right... I have a son who will be driving at year's end, so I'll be rotating cars down, thus my need. The sole reason I am leaning toward the E63 is due to natural aspiration. This is the reason I am not waiting/considering the M5. In Texas, we don't take too kindly to turbos or govt. healthcare. Gas goes to 3 or 4 per gallon???--more for me
