How to make the kickdown from 7th --> 3rd in S mode?

I have been trying a while but still could not make my tranny to do more aggressive downshift like from 7th directly to 3rd.

Say, when I am at about 60 mph, if I floor it (holding the left paddle)==> it would go down only to 4th gear.

I tried few times to cruise at 60 either @ D6 or D5 and floor it from there with left paddle firmly held, and it still only downshift only to 4th.

I thought the tranny would go down to the lowest possible gear. 3rd gear @ 60 mph should still be within red line.

Can anyone give me suggestion on where I might have missed?

Many thanks in advance!!

Mitch

I just did a quick experiment near by my office 15 min ago. I engaged M mode and timed the upshift of 1st --> 2nd, 2nd --> 3rd, and 3rd --> 4th all at very near the red line.

Then, I switched back to S mode and get to speed above 50 mph. Now I do get the tranny to downshift all the way to 3rd once I floored it.

Now I am a lot more satisfied about the accleration from cruising speed......

I found this also works in C mode. The only difference is that the down shift seems to have a bit more delay when it is in C mode.

I am wondering if the tranny is controlled by a system which would adjust how aggressive the downshift. If I don't drive the car as aggressive for few days, will it adjust back to default setting?

Welcome to the boards, If racing you should always be in M mode. The s+ mode seems to do the job just right when you want a kick in the butt

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I do use M a lot on winding road and enjoy greatly on the quick gear shifting.

S is my daily driving mode and I was trying to find the best way to do acceleration on express or free way from cruising speed (just in case that I need it......). I am now happy to find out how to get the ECU engaging in aggressive mode. I hope to make it stay that way.

Def use M mode for the qucikest downshifts. It shifts VERY quickly in M mode. I am plesantly suprised at how fast in fact. And the sound when downshifting is music to my ears. beautiful

Totally agree on the "music to ears" part......

Downshift in M is pretty fast; however, lazyness will have me in S/S+ mostly in daily driving. That's why I was a bit confused why my tranny would only get down to 4th before I realized it needs to be trained.

I noticed that, in M mode, I have to click on each downshift. Is there a way I can do by just holding the paddle and get to lowest gear?

I agree! I have my AMG button set up to automatically go to S mode. I can't stand C mode.

I doubt they would problem the downshift button to continually down shift while holding onto it. imagine accelerating while pulling on the paddle, i'm sure some people don't know how to let go. :-)

But that's interesting what you're trying to do there, 7 -> 3rd gear. I think the computer does a calculation which allows you to only downshift to a gear that is below 6K RPM or something along those lines. It would make sense that it does. Just a thought

There is a way to downshift multiple gears while using the paddle shifters, without having to click multiple. regardless of mode (C,S,S+, or M)

Holding on the left shift paddle while flooring the gas is when I am trying to aggressivly accelerate. It works pretty good!!

But I could not make it act the same way in M. It just moves one gear with sigle click of paddle.

Do you know the trick in M?

Mine works the same way in all transmission modes. I simply hold down the downshift paddle for a split second and the gears drop from 7th to 3rd.

Try holding the gear selector down before mashing the gas pedal. If you mash it simultaneously the clutch will rev match the RPM. Let the car downshift first.

Yes, it did work. But the speed of auto downshifting is a bit slower than my liking. I can clearly see each number going down. The auto downshifting in S/S+ mode feels like jumping and not all number were that clear compared with in M mode.

Before flooring the gas, I need to wait for the auto downshift to take place first. This may casue the overall acceleration performance slower than just flooring the gas and quick clicking the downshift paddle.

I will play around some more and see which way is better.

it all depends on how fast you are going when you attempt to downshift. try downshifting at a slower speed to get into the meat of the power band. i've noticed that when going down to third gear @ 80mph or higher the vehicle does not feel as strong as shifting from 65-70mph.

Totally agree! Whenever the lowest possible gear has gone beyond 3rd gear (which is about over 75 mph), the pulling force then does not seem to be very strong from 4th gear acceleration.

Maybe I give a bit too much expectation in regard of acceleration from higher cruising speed. Given this is a N/A engine and with total weight over 4200 lbs, it is still a very powerful 4-door sedan with pretty impressive handling from this W212 frame!!

I am just trying to squeez a little bit our from it......

I finally decided to change my speedo screen to the AMG one today so I can see my mph (small view) and the gear Im in. I was cruising at about 65 in 7th and did a half mash on the pedal and it jumped down to 3rd gear.
Must be the tune/map... ???

It also has to do with how well the ecu has adapted to your driving, if you are a aggressive daily driver it will drop to a low gear because it has learned .. but if you just cruise then usually it will not because the ecu does not think you need to be in the lowest gear possible.
