Just ordered the Supersprint exhaust system for the w212 E63!

Hey guys!

I just placed an order for the supersprint exhaust system for my w212 E63. I went with headers, the cat pipes (instead of direct pipes) and muffled center exhaust (instead of the Xpipe). I chose to keep my stock rear mufflers and tips, and they said there were gonna send me special pipe sleeves free of charge that would connect it to the center exhaust.

Heres a website where you can see their stuff:
http://www.supersprint.com/USP000mer2121.asp

It is a little on the expensive side but ive heard nothing but really good stuff about Supersprint, so I think the extra premium is worth it. I was considering going with Cargraphic initially, it would have been almost half the price, but im happy with my choice atm.

As soon as the parts get here, I will take pics etc (hopefully during the installation too) and ill post some sound clips after its installed

I look forward to hearing your feedback on the exhaust. Any chance you will have a dyno done before and after to get a sense of the actual improvements . . I saw what Supersprint posted on their website but it would be nice to see independent verification of those claims.

Good luck!

I too would like to see the before and after dynos but you also need to re-do your tune (you do have one right?).

Yes I do have a current tune now Vic, but im gonna take my car in for a major service before I install the exhaust and I think im due for a software update, so that should remove the tune I guess. I will ask for all 3 dyno results for stock, exhaust, and exhaust+tune :P

Got an update from SS, parts should ship on the 27th

I've been looking for a nice cat-back system.. It seems there are not too many options available yet. I look forward to see the results!

Guys does anybody know what the weight of the stock exhaust system is? I was told that the SS exhaust system that I ordered is 45kg and was wondering whether this was lighter or heavier than stock. Its currently at the airport in Milan, just done its export scan so it should be getting here pretty soon I hope.

If it's stainless steel then the weight of the two system will likely be close. If you were purchasing a titanium exhaust system, then weight savings would be more substantial.

Congrats on the purchase.... I can't wait to see your results

Phew!!

Full day at the garage today tryin to get everything installed. Unfortunately the position of one set of the sensors is all the way back at the cats (which are almost at the middle) and the sensor cable is nowhere near long enough for it to connect there. So my garage is planning to take the cat pipes tomorrow and just make a new hole for the sensors at a more convenient location.

I have a lot of pics etc and ill post them tomorrow as soon as I get the car, with Dyno results etc.

Okay guys, the Supersprint exhaust has finally been installed on my car, and there are quite a few points about it, both good and bad. Im pretty tired right now, so gonna be brief but feel free to ask any questions. Starting off with the good points;

The sound, in my personal opinion, is AWESOME. It sounds very sharp, sporty and has that 'italian' note to it. It is definitely not to everyones taste however. The garage owner said he personally didnt like the sound of it at all, as it didnt have any hint of the usual grunty "AMG" v8 sound.

The installation of the parts from Supersprint was fairly straight forward, albeit a little difficult with the actual headers. The installers said it was a pretty agitating job compared to the Cargraphic LTH that they installed on another w212 E63 just a couple of weeks before, which was a lot easier to install.

Bad points;

There seemed to be a little bit of miscommunication with the guys at supersprint. I wanted to make sure that I didnt have to cut any part of the stock exhaust system, so I sent them emails asking whether the stock rear mufflers / tips would have to be cut off in order to install them on the SS system, or if the stock ones were segmented / clamped somehow. I was told there was no cutting or welding needed, and hence I did not order the SS rear mufflers. Turns out that they were wrong, and I did have to end up cutting my rear mufflers off the stock exhaust.... In the heat of the moment I didnt give it much thought, but now that I think of it, I was a bit doing it, but whats done is done . I should have waited and ordered the SS mufflers and tips instead.

Also, the position of one pair of their sensor slots is pretty off. One pair is correctly placed just before the cats, and that fits fine. The other is at the back of the cats, and the sensor cable is nowhere NEAR long enough to reach it. So the garage I was at, just made a new hole for the sensor next to the first one and that worked out fine.

Power gains. This, right now, seems to be a lot less than what I expected it to be. My car, stock, did 376 whp on a dyno dynamics. After a stage 1 tune, it did 392 whp. After installing the exhaust (with the stage 1 tune still on) it did 389 whp However, I had been driving the car pretty hard around 40 mins before it was dynoed and I was kind of pushing the guys @ the garage to dyno it, whereas they wanted to wait till it cooled down more. I then went on and had them put the stage 2 tune on, gave it a good 1h 30mins to cool down, and the figure went up to 416 whp. I dont know whats from the tune and whats from the exhaust on that one though, but they arent the gains I was expecting regardless. I was asked to drive the car for a day after the ECU retune, and then go back and dyno it again. Hopefully I can get at least 425 whp out of it. On the road though, I feel a significantly greater pull from the car especially at the low end, and it doesnt feel like the engine is having to work as hard. Just a bit dissapointed about the dyno results, but again, the outside air temp was 40 degrees celsius, and I got 392 back when it was around 25 degrees celsius. Ill go in tomorrow and have it dynod again.

Sound wise, right now there seems to be a dull 'papery' kind of sound in the mid RPM range at full throttle. Almost sounds like crumpling paper. I dont know what it is, but im assuming its the cats making that noise as they are still new, and im hoping itll go away once I get a some km's on the system? I dont know, would appreciate some input there.

Overall though, apart from having to chop the stock exhaust up a bit, I must say I am satisfied with the product so far. Supersprint have been really good to deal with and were always very prompt with their responses. The cutting/welding part must have just been misunderstood due to the language barriers.

Thats all I can think of right now fellas. Ive barely slept 4 hours in the past 48 hours, ill post some more later and if you have any questions or comments or inputs please write away. I have taken some before and after videos and I will post them online tomorrow, I am just trying to find a way to block out the number plate in videos.. if anyone has any ideas on that, please let me know. Here are the pics, as promised.

The stuff just outta the boxes:

Stock cats / headers and SS cats / headers

The parts that needed to be cut

Thanks for your detailed writeup and photos.... I think at this point Im going to leave my exhaust stock. Ill end up dumping this car soon enough for the E63 5.5TT or BMW F10 M5.

Yes, if I get a F10 ill part the wheels but if I get the W212 E63 TT- the wheels will move right on over- same chassis.

The sound is AMAZING!!!! Much more aggressive then stock. Really woke the car up.

Dont worry about cutting the mufflers off. As long as the pipes are completely welded then you are good to go.

did you put back the metal bar that goes across the resonator and secondary cat?

Interesting results, my car dynoed around ~460 (~440 SAE) (dynojet) RWHP with tune+primary cat delete and ROW airboxes. It seems like you could have achieved same results without the long tubes (just a tune, stock headers and primaries cat delete).

I am not sure Azn as I was not in the garage when they finalized the installation and didnt look underneath since. I will have a look on Monday when I take it back.

Albert, I think those dyno dynamics are extremely conservative with the figures, compared to other dynos. I thought about doing the cat delete but I saw some videos and I didnt really like the sound of a primary cat delete, sounded too metallic for my liking, which is why I got the SS mufflers and cats.
