Resonator Questions

Hey guys, i have put 800 miles on the car and everything is great, except the squeaky f****** brakes!! But the exhaust note leaves me wanting something more. If i were to do a resonator delete, or anything regarding the resonators, i would like to fully understand my options. Are there different types of resonators or is it an on/off thing, resonator or just replacement piping. Is there any way to have an easily interchangeable setup where i can go res or no res as i like?

Thanks,
Josh

Remove secondary cats and resonator. Replace with three inch x pipe to OEM mufflers.

You have a 2012 which is the TT engine so the cats are not easily removed... all the cats are pre the o2 sensor- there are no cats after the o2 sensor so if you pull them will get a CEL. I recommend 100000% the resonator removal on our TT cars.

Here is the thread on what I did- a simple resonator removal which woke up the "hell" out the car. Put it this way, I have a N/A E63 with post cats and resonator removal and its a kitten compared to the CLS63TT with just the resonator removal. Its a very basic procees: remove the resonators and replace with straight pipes. If you dont like it, put it back on. My local muffler guy is very well known to the LA and OC exhaust modders and did a great job.

Its also a very very cheap mod for the sound gains. Below is the link to my post which has a startup vid; but unfortunately I have not done a drive by vid yet. Trust me, if you like deep throaty powerful sounding exhaust notes, this is for you:

Thank you both for your input, I will make a decision soon. What is the general price x-pipe + labor. Also, I want it louder but not super loud, could you guys tell me what the most mild exhaust mod would be in terms of volume difference? Thanks

for the TT (as the NA car is not the same engine or exhaust set up):

xpipe to replace the resonator will increase sound but not too much as member Neosky has posted. I guess about a 10% increase in sound at startup and at WOT vs stock.

straight pipe to replace resonator will increase sound more than x pipe as I have posted but its a pure sound and fitting of a 550hp car. Its not super loud but it is appropriate IMHO. I guess 20% increase in sound at startup and at WOT but very limited drone at cruising rpms (2500 or so).

Again, these are changes that can easily and cheaply be returned to stock.

Thanks Vic, one last question. How hard is it to replace the xpipe back with the resonators? Are we talking like an hour at a car workshop?

More like 30 minutes tops at a good muffler shop...

@Vik
I had asked in another thread but does doing this void the MFG warranty or affect getting smogged?

Thanks

I guess I couldnt say with 100% certainty that it wont void your warranty but its a pretty unintrusive mod. It doesnt affect the engine in any way since its post turbos and basically pre exhaust. Its when people start modifiying their turbos and other parts closer to the internals where it could get dicey.

As for smog the resonators wont cause an issue either.

Ill say this, I have less than 2k miles on the CLS and really dont do a lot of stop and go driving around the city; most of it is toll road high speed runs. But today I spent about 30 minutes in a lot of stop and go situations where I was at the front of the stop lights most of the time. The car's sound is just flat out awesome. Its the best mod Ive done to the car and one of my best exhaust mods ever on any of my cars almost equal to the Meisterschaft Race I put on the M6 and that car was a v10 symphony. Im considering getting a 2012 E63 wagon or sedan to replace my 2010 and if I do, with no hesistation from the dealer lot to the muffler shop I go.

And you should have the start up video too!!! As easy as it is to do, its just as easy to return to stock if you dont like the sound.
