Angry Steering wheel/column vibration

My car is back at the dealer trying to diagnose steering vibration. Feels like severe scuttle shake, the steering wheel and column are vibrating when driving. Definatly not wheel balancing or tyre wear. Im sure the fualt lies at the lower steering column joint or the rack itself. Wondering whether anybody else has had the same sensation and its been fixed at the dealer?

At the risk of stating the obvious, does your car have the lane departure warning system and could it be malfunctioning? I'm assuming you would know if that's what it was, but that would certainly cause the steering wheel to vibrate. Good luck.

No definatly something majorly wrong, not lane assist. With the engine off if you turn the steering wheel left and right there's a loud knocking noise.

Yeah that doesn't sound good. Sounds like it may be a problem with the rack itself.

It's a 2010 with AMG performance pack. It's back at the dealer so should know more on Monday. I only got it 2 weeks ago so it had this problem since I bought it. I gather reading some forums that some C63s suffer the same sort of problem.

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
Wow, the symptoms definitely sound serious. Also interested in finding out what they find.

Question

Heard back from the dealer today, they have ordered a new steering column but before they fit it their getting another E63 AMG in and comparing the parts to make sure is definatly the column itself as its £4000 to fix. Under warranty of course. The vibration and loud knocking noise would suggest its the collum. I will know more in couple of days.

Gosh, another example showing how important it is to have extended warranty.

Mercedes Benz have told me they have definatly found the cause of my steering vibration, at first they thought it needed a new steering collum but on further instruction from AMG they said that on a few cases it was the steering wheel airbag which is faulty and is causing a massive vibration and knocking sensation. They said that they took out the airbag and drove it and hey presto no more vibration, they also tested another E63AMG at the same time to make sure it's definatly the cause.
However I won't be getting the car back until next week sometime so will have to wait a while. I really do hope this is the end of vibration issues. Personally i still think its the something to do with the steering collum I'm not sure whether the airbags to blame but we will see.
I wonder whether anybody else has had the same diagnosis?

Hi Andy, how did you get on in the end?

I've just had my car back from the dealer with the same issue. When the airbag is removed, the vibration stops. Now it's back in, it's there again. The service manager just said that's how it is and there's nothing they can do. I'm really disappointing to be honest as it's completely spoiled the car.
