Thinking of buying used HRE's, what to watch out for?
Hi guys, any specifics to be wary or aware of? Tried to search the forum but the only thing I got was to use PayPal in case there are disputes. What about more technical issues?
Or maybe the reply would just be 'don't do it'?
Thanks

Obviously HRE from the factory = perfection but used wheels are something else as it involves the user, driving habits, roads, car, tires, pressures, hazards, etc the list goes on and on.
That being said, if I was going to buy a set of HRE's used the two main things would be:
1. Cosmetics- any damage? Road rash, chips, dents, gouges, etc
2. Structural- is the wheel true? Is the rotation warped? Wobbles vertically and laterally?
To me structural is more important as cosmetics can be fixed easily.

Any HRE will can be send back for inspection and service. For 3pc wheel, one of the most important factors is if the wheel has been refinished by a 3rd party. Often times refinishing cannot be seen by the normal eye. You can always contact us and find out the original finish of the wheels. Any 3rd party repair work done to wheels will often diminish the strength of the wheel. If you have any questions about refinish or servicing of an HRE wheel, feel free to contact VinceB@hrewheels.com with your questions.
I'm available with any questions.

Thanks all, I really appreciate the advice.
Seems like the challenge is how one would get the wheels checked like for structural issues of the buyer and seller are ot local. Thoughts?
Also, is it a no-no to powdercoat 3 pieces forged wheels? I'd been told its bad for cast wheels, but seems like it would be fine for forged.
These are the wheels I was looking at on this forum, what do you think of the figment Vic?

Refinishing forged wheels is fine. However often times taking forged wheels to a powder coat shop where the shop treats the forged aluminum like any other metal is not. Most metal products that go to a powder coat shop are less sensitive for high temperatures. Powder coat shops want to turn around their services quickly and therefore prefer to powder coat at high temperatures which will deteriorate forged aluminum wheels. It is recommended to have HRE refinished/serviced by HRE ourselves to guarantee it done properly.
The process of refinishing any forged aluminum wheel is the same. Any incorrect temperature of powder coating forged aluminum will result in a cracked wheel in the future.
Cast wheels are less sensitive to powder coating then forged aluminum.
The question your asking pertains to any forged wheel brand.

Hard to tell if those are reverse lip.
I had reverse lip HRE years ago and there was an issue in the rain...water got into the inside stepped lip and coulden't escape. It sloshed around and caused severe vibration at speed. This was common to reverse lip I came to find out.
Not sure if they made a techincal impovement to nullify that.

Wow, stuff I never thought about / knew came up in these responses. I think one of the most significant new tidbits is the fact (straight from the horse's mouth) that powdercoating heat is even worse for forged than for cast wheels. That definitely gives me pause.
