Talking Official Introduction and "2014 E63 S Order placed" Thread!

Hey all,
I have been lurking and occasionally posting for awhile now. Thought I would make it official since I placed my order for a 2014 E63 S model sedan today at my local dealer. Specs are as follows:

2014 E63 S model: $99,770
792 Palladium Gray
821 Black interior w/contrasting stitching and silver seat belts
736 Black Ash interior trim
995 pkg AMG Surround View camera package ???
997 pkg Driver Assistance Package ???
P60 AMG Night styling ???
September Build for likely November delivery.

I was torn between the 2104 LCI M5 with comp package, the 2104 E63 S Model and the fiscally responsible Audi S6. I currently drive a 2011 X5 50i M-Sport suv and wanted a sedan this go around. My first inclination was the M5. Got to drive it, loved the power and handling. Wife did NOT like the 560hp and the RWD together here in Ohio where we get a fair bit of snow a few times a year. Even though I knew I was going to get snow tires, she was still very hesitant, especially thinking about me and our 3 yo son, since I drive him around as much if not more than she does.

I drove the Audi to do my due diligence. It is a very nice car, the tech on the car beats everyone. Good acceleration, not great. Fun, not exciting. Steering is pretty boosted and lacks a lot of feel. This went to the bottom of my list unless $$ became a huge issue.

After thinking it over and talking with the 2 local MB dealers, I figured, hey, if it will make the wife (and thus the life) happier, maybe I should go for the E63...

At first, I was going for the M5 because I have been a bimmer guy for several years now and I could get a better price on the M5 even though it was a new year with updates. Dealer relationship, BMW CCA discount, loyalty discount etc. But after talking with the two local dealers, one came back with an offer I couldn't refuse, so I said YES! (It is good I figured this out when I did, because I was planning on buying a used set of M5 wheels and snow tires this weekend if I didn't decide on the E63).

All rambling aside, I am very excited to joining the MB/AMG family and look forward to the arrival of my new car and learning and sharing about the car in the future.

Now I have 4+ months to think about mods...snow tires and wheels, tint, clear bra, resonator delete, Video in Motion, Radar detector...etc etc, etc.

Thanks for listening,
Mike

PS Can I have an admin change my user name or do I have to create a new account if I want to ditch the name I have been using for the last few years for something a little more AMG/MB appropriate?

Congrats. Can't wait to see some of these new S models that people have ordered.
Maybe the first one to post some pics of their new S model should get a free name change.

That's weird. The dealer order guide says this 995 Pkg costs $1,290.

2014 E63S Wagon
E63S Wagon

I ordered the wagon back on August 8 and still don't have a build date. According to the dealer it's supposed to build sometime in September for an October delivery but then it should have locked by now--which isn't the case. I know there are rumblings of production delays--can anyone verify that? I'm not a patient person... (is anyone who orders a wagon that goes 0 - 60 in under 4 seconds?)

The sheet for the unit I'm picking up this week shows the cost of Pkg 995 at $800. It too will be combined with 997 Driver Assist Pkg.

Perhaps it has a higher cost as when not coupled with 997?

The only other sheets I've seen were from a zero option unit and yet another with 995 and 997.

Your build date appears a bit short. I ordered a wagon in June and was given a January build date.

Getting a Sept build from an Aug order is only possible if he already committed to a production slot a few months ago and was just waiting for a buyer to come along. I ordered in late April when they were giving July slots, which got pushed to Sept.

I was told by my dealer that the wagons were "pull orders only" meaning they had to be sold units and not for inventory. Could they still have reserved a production slot?

Your dealer is either wrong or was lying. Trust me. But the reality is probably that very few dealers would do this since E63 wagons don't sell.

By the way, I got one of the first US wagons; should be on a boat right now.

Got S-Wagon on order since january. Got a build date for december 10th with delivery january 26th.
Obsidian black/light brown interior (designo)
forged wheels
premium package
B&O
CCB (still debating that... but tried them last week at AMG event and loved them)

Wagons are indeeed order only car in canada anyways. cant say about USA.

I'm actively looking at winter tires to put on the beast when it arrives, as in january the stocks are usually low I will get them soon.

I too am very interested in a rec for snows. I read the amg engineer that designed the 4matic wanted to retain different overall wheel sizes (smaller rear) so it seems a square (255's all around) is not an option for the 4matics. Wonder if there is a 225/255 or 235/265 possibility.

lol. Incorrect in several ways. Rears aren't smaller than fronts- both are 19". Rears are wider (9.5") than fronts (9"). Square is definitely an option for us; many folks do this on W212. 255 is also definitely available for either 18" or 19" for us. E.g. 255/40 R18 XL, or 255/35 R19 XL. However, I know of only ONE staggered winter tire setup available - Pirello Sottozero II in 255F/285R for 19" wheels.

Winter wheels/tires is definitely a challenge. No easy answers regarding either wheels or tires! Grrrrr.

255/35/19 = 26.03 in 661.10 mm
285/30/19 = 25.73 in 653.60 mm

Sorry...smaller overall diameter in rear than front and from what I've read the engineer specified that (small) percentage difference for center diff effectiveness. Hope square turns out to be ok.

Show us where you have read these things. There are numerous AWD cars and SUVs where you can run slightly different winter tires than the summer tires. BMW, Audi, Porsche..with no issue as long as the differences stay under 2-3%. Having them exactly the same as opposed to 7.5mm off in diameter seems unlikely to cause problems.

Yes, please give us a link to where you heard (presumably Tobias) say that.

As an FYI, when people say "square" they're referring to running the same tire widths all around. Slightly different tire diameters is not generally an issue except that many AWD cars (not sure if E63) will specify a max difference, like 3-4%, front to rear.

Its only one thing. Not "these things" and I dont remember which mag.
7.5mm = 1.2 mph difference @ 60 if you go to square. It would be the equivalent of going to a staggered set up on my square evo, sti, a4. Maybe it wont make a difference. Ive just never owned an all wheel drive car that used different OD front to rear.

If the car runs staggered widths, differing diameters are inevitable. E.g. a Porsche 993 turbo/C4S has wider rear tires with rolling diameter 1.6% less than fronts. But the Porsche uses a viscous coupling, so diameter differences actually matter! We can be certain that 1-2% differences won't matter at all for us, and it's possible 4%+ may not even matter; we're still trying to figure that out.

DO you think Merc will eventually make a recommendation? Tire rack has no info yet. I did see x-ray went 255's all around. It would be nice to drop down to 18's for our terrible Philly roads here.

I found this in the owner manual:My apologies-I hope the attachment shows up.

It seems staggered or uniform both are acceptable. I hope this helps.

I'd expect the winter tire recommendations are in the owners manual like in the past, but I don't have my car yet.

But like I said, no way will MBZ require tires to be within 1% or 2% of each other. Simply not gonna happen. 4% maybe.
