Winter tires revisited

Earlier in this thread, the situation where some aftermarket 19" wheels will not fit the 2014+ E63S is discussed.
#229
In 2014 Mercedes added a heat shield to keep brake heat from degrading the hubs and propshaft joints added for 4matic. That heat shield was designed to do a thorough enough job that Mercedes set the diameter for 19" wheels and took away the (infrequently used) 18" option.
18" wheels are an option for 4matic cars *if* you are willing to trim the heatshield and then mitigate the issue by staying away from the track or repeated heavy braking.

2019 E63 S
This is the difference. The brakes have been roughly the same for all w212 E63s. 2010-2013 cars could be bought with 18" wheels.

I have a suggestion... On the GTr forums, we have a thread called "Wheel and tire thread" and in the first message, the OP edits his message to put all the configuration that works... Front/rear and square... That helped me chose a new summer package (squared) and this would be great for the E63 to know for example "I want to downsize for winter with a square setup" and looking at the first post, you would see what have been done and what works...

Edit: doesn't look stock! What rim sizes are you using?

Ordering Winter Kit
Ok, after lots of consultation with this forum, research, and speaking to/measuring with my tire guy, I'm going with 245/40/19 front, 275/35/19 back on Replika 142 wheels. I know the diameter is slightly larger, but the reduced width appears to balance it out in terms of clearances. My tire guy also agreed to put one on and do a test fit, and if things don't work out, swap out the tires for something that will. I'm either doing Dunlop Winter Sports or Blizzak LM32s.
I'll report back once I get things mounted, probably in a few weeks.

I'm using the Replika R142 in 19x8,5 with 35 mm offset. Did a dry run and everytrhing fits perferctly with the 255/35/19 tires.
I can't comment on the way the car feels with square setup as I did not put the winter setup on yet. Maybe next week or the week after depending on weather. My wife's Odyssey is already on the Hakka 8 studded and my Saab is going to be on monday (Hakka 7 studded) so I can stretch the E on summer shoes a bit longer.

nokian R2s on OZ wheels , square. Fit is great. Tires are loud. Any recommended winter tire pressure?

I just put my winter shoes on this weekend. I went with the Sottozeros in a 255/35 square setup as I had excellent success with this tire on my previous M3. Here's a couple shots.

How about the tire pressure. Does it need to be as high as the summer performance tires?

It all is a function of how much weight you intend to carry and at what speed you intend to travel. Look inside the gas filler door for recommended pressures for different permutations of load and speed.

Nokian Hakka R2s
I went with jim911's setup, except in Gunmetal instead of Black.
With temps here in the upper 20s/low 30s (F) the last few days, the stock Conti's felt like hockey pucks; while the Nokian tires are far softer at ambient temperatures, they're the consistency of hot marshmallows. Sigh. I guess I'll trade crappy dry road winter performance for satisfactory real winter performance for our skiing family.

play with the pressure a bit, they don't handle that bad for winter. We are getting our first snow tonight, so hopefully I can try them out.

Got the Pirellis in stock sizes. The sidewall is crazy soft. Hate driving hard with them on. Wish I had square with a better tire. Be forewarned if you are considering a set.
