HELP PLEASE - Is 2010 Mercedez Benz E63 AMG a 'good' buy?
All,
I'll be buying a new car by early next week, so your help is greatly appreciated. I had decided on a 2012 BMW 535i w/Sports Package ++until I came across a 2010 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG on the lot. 25K miles; 2 past owners (both local, in Houston). $46K cost (how is that?).
It only took 2 minutes into the test drive before I was pretty much sold on it. Incredible power, torque, handling .. it had everything. The only thing its missing is Warranty, as the initial 4 Year/50,000 Mile warranty expired in February 2014. This is my #1 concern, as I'm hearing that MB parts don't often come cheap..
From a reliability, maintenance, and cost of upkeep/service perspective, how is the (2010) MB E63 AMG? What are the most common issues that this model (AMG series) typically sees?
I will scour the forum for this information, but I thought it could help reach out direct.

Indeed, the lack of a warranty is worrisome unless yo have a very deep pocket. Maybe you can work on an aftermarket warranty to fill that void. I would say it is reliable. Routine maintenance cost and upkeep/service cost are not too bad, but you will definitely be charged more than the typical run of the mill MB's or BMW's. Of course, the dreaded headbolt issue is there, even though it is mostly rare.

The 2012's are better with the twin turbos and I think this car has a warrantee too.

In general, the motors are more powerful because you can tune them easier to crazy power, and they have slightly better economy out of the box.
But reliability? Just wait until you need turbo work.
And the sound? Not better.

That's why you buy an extended MB Warrantee for 3 to 4 grand so your good up to 100K miles and then get rid of the car. The sound, ya I'll give you that, the older ones do sound better, turbos tend to muffle sound some, but I think my 2012 sounds just right for me, I don't like cars that are too loud.

Agree w/Ottaki here. I was in the same situation as you a fe months ago. But unlike you, I was patiently waiting for a "good example" to come into the lot of CarMax. I waited for about 5 months b4 1 came along & jump on it after the test drive & after it passed my inspection. I wanted to buy from CarMax cuz of 2 reason: 1. I like their no haggle sale price & more importantly 2. They have an excellent 3rd party extended warranty. Buyer the most or low deductible you can afford & your set.
Last time I bought a new car was back in '06 when the m5 e60 just came out. Ever since then, I been buying newer use cars from CarMax. Uses their extended warranty several times & always come thru without any issues.

The other thing too if you bought the 2010 and no warrantee you could get stuck with the head bolt issue...I'm surprised benz did not extend out the warrantee for that issue because it's obviously a mfg defect, one of which people would get stuck for paying themselves if their cars happened to be out of warrantee.

You can do a lot of repairs with 10 to 15 grand. Buy a good third party warranty and have a lot of money left over to pay the deductibles on the warranty. The 2010's depreciation won't be as bad as the 2012'a either.

Price correction: the car is $48,000.
They quoted me a third warranty warranty on the car; 3 year, 40,000 mile warranty for $6,000. Does that seem reasonable? Any suggestions for third party warranty companies i can contact?
Scheduled a pre-buyers inspection at a MB dealer recommended car technicians for monday. Hoping everything is in good order. Should i request a software update, or will that be determined during the testing?

You can try Fidelity. There are many insurances out there that try to sound the same but I think this is the one:

I got a much better price from www.carchex.com for an aftermarket warranty. If my car wasn't modified I'd jump on it.

I would not even bother with a aftermarket warrantee. I use to sell cars and found a lot of the time they'd back out of covering things. The only way I'd buy a MB is if it were under factory warrantee so I could buy a genuine MB extended warrantee up to 100K miles or so and then trade in the car before that ran out. These AMG's are very expensive to work on without a warrantee especially if it's something major that goes wrong like a head bolt issue or drivetrain. Keep that in mind. Might be better off spending a little more initially for something with a existing warrantee.

I also just bought a 2010, but I had 4 months left on the factory warranty, So I could buy the extended. The 7/100000 was $3100. I also contacted direct buy, they first quoted me $7000 for the warranty with a $100 ded. I told them MB gave me a $3100 and they quickly matched it. But I went with MB anyway.

I didn't go with Carchex because they didn't want to warranty my vehicle at all - even if I only had an intake or exhaust modification. They don't even want to warranty the power windows in that case. Nothing. So that was a bust.
However. The finance manager from my local dealership just gave me a great alternative at an amazing price by a very solid company. I don't want to go posting this guy's contact information but if anyone is interested, send me a PM. I have no connection to any of this other than the fact that my extended warranty plan is being written up as I type this out - I just made the purchase myself...

E63 AMG 2010 Black
I bought one a week ago in KSA,its a US import,best car ive been in,driven the C63 before this,amazing car but the noise and power i personally reckon is a lot better in the E63. So much to keep you occupied ive still not launched it and a lot to learn about this car. I bought it without warranty but i'll be paying mercedes a visit in Jeddah to sort it out. Dont think,get it mate you will not be disappointed!
