Thumbs down News: The 2015 E63 S is Uninsurable Under GEICO's Mechanical Breakdown Insurance

Just got a very unpleasant surprise in my preparation to pick up my new 2015 E63 S on Tuesday. My auto insurer, GEICO, informed me that the E63 S, as well as "many other AMG cars" is NOT insurable under its Mechanical Breakdown Insurance program. They said the claims experience on the car is too high and they will not write that coverage for the car at any premium.

The irony is that GEICO readily insured my 2014 911 Turbo S under that program -- a car costing almost twice as much. They said the mechanical breakdown claims experience on the Porsche is better.

Ugh. Looks like MB's ridiculously expensive ELW is in my future for the car. Best quote that for the 7/100K plan (now the max since September) was $6,400
(sought quote from the usual dealers popular here). Prices on the program basically doubled in the beginning of September.

What was the best quote on the maintenance plan if you shopped those?

7/100k for $6400 is a deal these days.. Trust me it will more than pay for itself in less than 2 yrs... + Excellent perk when you decide to sell her (just make cert the warranty is transferable it def shouldn't be an issue)

I think the real news here is that someone uses GEICO to insure expensive cars.

LOL. Been using them for years. I had one significant claim on my E60 550 (undercarriage damage of unknown origin -- probably caused by hard mountain driving meets with roads with sharp hilltops and elevation changes) and they paid the claim in full with no issues.

I checked with the dealership and they told me that GEICO mechanical breakdown insurance pays well and they were happy when a car had it.

Who would you recommend for auto coverage?

Sadly, MB doubled prices on the ELW on September 3, 2014 and slashed the maximum warranty miles to 100k.

I got quotes from the major sellers of ELWs on this forum. The lowest quote from the lady that everyone goes to (without naming her expressly here but everyone here knows who she is). The price quote range I got was narrow (from $6400 to $6700).

Hey sdg1871,

What did you end up doing for extended warranty? Did you go with Mercedes ELW?

I know the popular belief is that you need to get an ELW. Yet if your car is paid for and you don't have a car note having to pay $5000 a year in maintenance is still cheaper than paying $1000 per month in a car note especially if you still like your car. My belief is that you need a warranty as long as you have a car payment. I have a 1999 MB and it may cost me $3000 per year to keep it running nice but it's worth it because I can't find a car I like better for $250 per month.

Not shocking--- GEICO's main revenue stream is not MBP programs so they can pick and choose. And I can see why the Porsche is available but not the AMG after owning 8 AMG's and 4 Turbo Porsches (plus a GT3 and C4S). The turbo is considered a bulletproof gt/sports car and its electronics never caused me any issue compared to many of my AMG's that sat in the shop for extended periods. Im one sampling but owning 8 AMG's gives me some perspective.

I'd say you have some credibility ...

Well,...I won't buy my next E63 without an ELW..I drive an 07 E63 and have put on nearly $15k worth of warranty items. Some of the items you can't predict. For example, one of the ribs on my fan belt splintered off into the wiring harness which fried the ECU and other sensors...that repair job was around $7k...Just saying that I will pay for a "piece of mind" about repairs on my next Mercedes.

I've been very happy with State Farm. Have insured many cars with them over the years (6 BMWs and 4 Benzes in the last 6-7 years).

If you're ever in the market for new auto coverage, they're worth checking out.
